hello all, i am new to this forum, as this is my first post, and i'm also aware that this has been brought up before, i wanted to reply, but the thread had be closed... anyways, about my question...

i know that you're able to play hl2 and multiplayer along with mods on the net without having to pay a monthly fee, but i also heard there would be a 10 dollar fee per month to download additional content, i'm just curious as to what the fee (if there is one) gets you. I haven't researched this myself as i figure posting here will probably get my questions answered the quickest. Also, whats the difference between the normal edition and collectors edition? i think that was 2 of the different types of SKU's u could buy. Sorry if some of my terminology is incorrect lol.

Thx for yur time guys

It gets you expansion packs and all of Valve's games. These will also be available to buy in store.

There are three different versions

"Good, better, best" as Gabe said.

Single Player Only - Cheaper than normal
Traditional SP/MP - Normal price and just like every other game
Collector's Edition - Cool Bonus stuff (Like Models or mousemats)

It hasn't been confirmed what's going to be in the Collector's Edition and we have reason to believe it will be released after the other two versions.

Also, the Single Player Only is apparently only for the US.

That 10 should get you anything Valve releases while you are signed up. This may be little things here and there, will likely include retail products like Counter-Strike 2 and Team Fortress 2.
You can always buy these products in the store just like always.

so suppose i wait a year and get a monthly subscription, wouldn't i just be able to download cs2 and tf2 for $10? i dont think that's how it's going to work

We still don't know much about what we are getting, so we can't really say yet.

Yes but you'd only be able to play for a month.

EDIT: I should mention that this is not totally confirmed and Valve reserves the right to alter the price accordingly.

that would mean that valve is turning everything into pay-per-play, which is incredibly stupid, nobody would pay a monthly fee to play cs2, well i know i wouldn't, i'd buy it stand alone, but not a monthly fee

It's kinda like Pay to Play but you have the option of just buying the game and owning it forever without having to pay anymore.

Also, you can just download Half-Life 2 over Steam for a one of payment and own it forever.

that makes a little more sense, and seems much more reasonable. thx for the info

I don't think you have to pay if you buy the sp/mp package, ever, or for anything extra online after that.

I can copy paste the email i sent to him about it:

No, you won't have to pay if you buy the retail packaged product.

You can either go to a store and buy the game (say $50)

OR

you can pay a subscription fee.

If you only play a month, then the subscription fee is the way to go. If we
generate new games and expansion packs then the subscription fee is the
better deal. If we take five years to release any new content, then buying
the full game is the much better strategy.

Hope that makes sense.

Subject: Steam payment etc

I read something about 9.95 a month to play games online with steam.
If I already have a hl/cs cd key, or/and bought half-life 2, will I have to
pay for something, and if so, what?
Does this only include getting updates or actually playing?

Thanks in advance

actually i don't know exactly what he means :p
