that video card ranking thread got me thinking and now im curious as to how many of u would buy PCI-Express cards as soon as their available, assuming that the clock speeds and overall performances are significant gains vs the cards that are available right now..

this is based on assumptions of course.. im curious as to how u pple determine when u want/need a video card.. and just for curiosity's sake, assume that no matter ur current card, the gains with a PCI-Express card are significant.

are u the type of person that wants the latest and the greatest video card? u don't mind being a guinea pig(sp?) for the rest of us..

or do u wait for reviews? because u hate making mistakes on purchases and don't like to make un-informed decesions..

or is a budget something u need to have because simply u can't shell out as much as u would like? maybe the top notch card isn't something u can get but u want the best bang for ur buck..

anyway, vote and post ur reasons..

depending on financial status i wouldn't mind being a guinea pig.

Budget (after all, you pointed out in that other thread that I have a swimming pool, which I don't really have in reality, seeing as how that was a wet road after some rain back where I used to live), I get a new graphics card once every year and a half, or so, and I go for slightly below high-end (Got a Radeon 9700 when the 9800 pro was brand new)

I will have my 9700 Pro a long time yet... The problem with the PCIX transition is that it requires a new mobo too. It will probably cost like $700 or so just to get a PCIX gcard for your computer. I dont think it will be worth it if you got a relativly modern computer (2ghz+/9500+).
So I'm a mix between budget and wait and see. Even if I had the money, I still wouldnt buy them right away. You dont want to see some serious bugs in the hardware come up.

Just to be clear "PCI-X" is *NOT* "PCI-Express". PCI-X is a faster (133mhz) version of the existing PCI bus which you'll see in server platforms currently. It uses the same physical form factor as current PCI cards. PCI-Express is totally different and will not support existing PCI cards.

I don't think graphic cards even use the entire bandwidth of 4x agp yet, so unless PCI-express can provide extra speed in some other way, I'm not going to get it untill I have too.

Budget, me. Can't afford much in one go, so I tend to save up.

My thread made you think? Wow. That's kinda flattering.:)

Oh yeah, sorry about that, I of course meant PCI-Express... At any rate, my stand is still the same. If you want a PCI-Express card, you have to buy a PCI-Express mobo, and question is how the range of memory/CPU support will look.

ill be building a new comp some time next year.....so it will no doubt have pci-express.......

it really depends on how much faster than a 9700pro the next gen of cards is......

ill be reading lots of reviews......

If I was getting a new PC, it would have PCI Express and I would get a PCI express card.
Otherwise I'll just stand on the sidlines and read reviews for now. :)
PCI-Express is faster and I believe is at 16x. How much faster we shall have to find out.
This next set of video cards will be made on PCI express technology but for a few months they will be built with a pciexpress to agp bridge but after that no more agp cards will be made.

some interesting opinions on buying habits and such.. but ya, thanks for pointing this out because clearly, it was out of my mind.. i *forgot* about it :p

anyway, still the poll is very close between the pple that would read reviews and the pple that would just wait and see for price drops.
