Gabe - Penny-Arcade - Every time I see a new screenshot from Doom 3 I chuckle. I just can’t help it. I mean these have to be some of the most uninspired creature designs ever. The idea is that you’re fighting monsters from Hell but the best the devil or whatever can come up with is a skeleton with guns on his shoulders. It’s like the devil is a 7th grader who hates his mom and draws pentagrams on his notebooks during intro to physical science.

You can tell when you look at Doom 3 that the focus of the company is on technology. I think Doom 3 will be a fantastic game engine but I think they are wasting their time trying to make a game with it. They obviously do not have any creative people working there. They should just put out the engine and let someone like Raven use it to make something genuinely interesting with it.

There is nothing wrong with not being creative. They should not be ashamed of the fact that they cannot create compelling concepts or characters. Just be satisfied with the fact that you can make the best game engines around and concentrate on doing that.

As much as i'm looking forward to D3, i just have to agree
with Gabe on this one.

Yeah, after reading the article, I can see what Tycho means.

But who knows, maybe playing it will be a good experience.

EDIT: Oh, you quoted Gabe. I'm not sure if I agree with Gabe as much as id are just trying to remake the first Doom.

Penny Arcade have never failed me.

In my opinion, I think there will be something bigger in store. I think in the actual game itself there will be really scary looking monsters, but we won't be getting screenshots of it now because id Software wants us to be surprised and shocked when we play the game.

My theory is that the monsters we are seeing now are just the lackeys to something much bigger and better.

You should point out that this Gabe is *not* the Gabe from valve. Just to prevent misunderstandings.
But yes, I agree on what he says... doom 3 is a joke.

Even scarier... maybe the final boss in D3 will be an evil wall!!!

I hope :) I do like Doom 3 though :) looks fun :D

There's no doubt I will end up buying it, but I still think Half-Life 2 will be much better.

Yeah, that would be an interesting twist. :E

offcourse the creatures look like shite, its a retelling of doom classic, so you need to have those creatures in it. revenant, mancubus, pinky imp, all doom classic monsters. but it was pretty funny tho :)

and id software has one of the best artists in thier team like kenneth scott, how cant it be creative the man is a bulk of creativity.

Who would guess that someone who names themself "EVIL", dubs themself "HellModerator" and has a red dude with glowing white eyes as his avatar would be a fan of Doom? :p

Even though I like PA a lot I have to say this is a matter of taste, I think the monsters are pretty well designed. Ok maybe not the upside down spiders (who thought that one up lol). The flying flaming skulls looked better in the original doom but that's besides the point. The pinkie for example is a prime example of a well designed beast, half mechanical half flesh. I don't know what some people have got against doom but it seems like they weren't fans of the original series.

*EVIL walks up to rec, grabs a rock and jammes it up rec's nose and walks away*

I was a huge fan of the original, which is probably why I'm so disgusted with what ID are doing with this latest incarnation.

They need to move on, the same stuff that made great games 8 years ago isn't the same stuff that makes them now, yet they insist on recycling their ideas without change.

I'll wait to pass any true judgement until I play it, but its not exactly at the top of my list.

its a retelling

^ This is the funniest thing I've read in a while. Because it's true. :)

PA doesn't have a clue. An artist can still be creative if he's inspired by art from previous games/movies. In fact, it's quite normal that game designers are inspired by other games or movies. Only in very rare occasions something truly original is created.

For example, a huge amount of the monster designs in the HL2 screenshots and movieclips are non-original. What we see is some remakes from HL1 monsters, a strider from War of the Worlds and a bug from Starship Troopers. So, although it's clear that the HL2 designers have been looking at other games/movies, I still think their work is creative. Because it's a heck of a lot of work to create a model from scratch based on an idea, no matter what the origin of the idea is. Same goes for what the Doom3 designers did with their monsters.
