New Scientist has discovered that Pentagon's National Security Agency, which specialises in eavesdropping and code-breaking, is funding research into the mass harvesting of the information that people post about themselves on social networks.

ie , myspace etc

the White House insists that the terrorist threat makes existing wire-tapping legislation out of date and is urging Congress not to investigate the NSA's action.

!?

Privacy groups worry that "automated intelligence profiling" could sully people's reputations or even lead to miscarriages of justice - especially since the data from social networking sites may often be inaccurate, untrue or incomplete, De Roure warns.

that really really sucks ..couldnt you join a social network that's overseas? surely they couldnt search through that

That is f*cked up. Seriously f*cked up.

Did you hear about the minor who was arrested for having pictures of himself holding two handguns on Myspace?

Did you hear about the other minor who's family was evicted from their house because he had two airsoft pistols in a picture on Myspace? The people who were renting the house to them found out, called the police, and the police searched and found nothing illegal. The renters didn't care, though, their family will now lose their home.

But this. This is so much more times worse...

I believe all the information posted on those sites is public domain, so I'm sure they'd be able to take whatever they wanted. While this certainly isn't pleasant, seeing as the information was voluntarily given up it probably isn't illegal.

It is just messed up...

How many evil conspiring terrorists will have a Myspace anyway?

you've got it all wrong, he's a fighter of evil-doers (that guy the hoff is manhandling definately looks swarthy) not inspiration for evil doers ..all though he inspires me to doing evil-doer deeds but I'm pretty harmless and a pacifist so I'll just take it out on some random hl2.netter

Yeah, this isn't that surprising really. You get Googled when you apply for a job and if you voluntarily post all sorts of personal info about yourself on the Net, you are really making it easy for anyone who wants to find out about you and your associations to do so in seconds. Not the brightest idea imho.

Well, it's inevitable really. This is extremely shitty, but what can I say? Just don't post stupid shit about yourself on the internet!

That said, down with the American Infidels!

Well if the country wont stop bending over and taking it what do you expect?

oh no.. im so worried about what uncle sam is discovering on my myspace. most people leave their myspace public anyway, so it seems like its joe nsa-agents right to check it out. if they were busting into my house and reading my journal or something i'd be pissed. if they are looking at a website i put up for people to read about me, i dont have anyone to blame but myself if the nsa looks at it.

Harvesting is OK, so long as they don't try and control what we do and what we say.

It's public information in the first place.

Um..

If they couldn't that would mean nobody could, and it'd be useless to have one then.
