I was reading some of the questions people have been asking valve and for me (a ut2k4 modder/mapper) they seem stupid. like "will vehicles be bsp or mesh?" for me bsp is static and doesn't move. like it will be in hl2 because we now have meshes. also the new terrain will be entirely different than anything you have done in half life 1.

there is also the size of the maps... you can have huge maps even using the default hl2 scale and you make make them as big as you want (but the bigger you get the less detailed it is) but in hl1 the maps where tiny and you only had a mock 3d sky box, but now we have 3d sky boxes...

so my point is all of you are stuck in the past and will have no clue what to do for a while, this is not meant to be mean or anything its just what i think. if you want me to go find more examples i can...

Yup agreed, the Unreal lot have had a lot of the Source type toys to play with for sometime, so yeah they'll have more of a clue to begin with.

unreal is ez but i must say that world craft was a bit ezer altho it is IMPOSABLE to learn w/o a tut. i mean how are you sopost to know how to set all the stupid settings up??? but after that i love it all exsept i hate that you have to add into nothing. it is imposable to get bsp holes if you subtract but it is soo ez to get them when you have to add.

if you want to learn UnEd here is the best site www.planetunreal.com/architectonic (i also have somthing like 2500 posts on the forums there)

btw. major thanks for not flamming me, i thought it would happen but you guys lived up to your modding status :)

Well, that settles it!

/me goes off to hunt UT2004 mappers and bring them to the EoJ cave.

Well, I started mapping for UT, the original one. Thats where I learned about modding, and from there I went to UT2k3, but HL2 came out, and well im here now.

I've never mapped for UT2k3, but I still feel pretty confident with the idea of using the next version of Hammer Editor. Many people learn quite quickly, I think you'll find.

Was anyone able to read BigCheese's first sentence with ease?
Iam quite confident HL2 mapping will be easier to grasp then that sentence. By a long shot.

Since when is HL2 out?

lol i know my English sucks...

luckily i already found my first hl2 job :) with the same team thats making Hackerz for ut2004... when we are done alot of us want to move onto hl2... also if we win the Make Something Unreal contest, we get lots of money and we can start a company and sell hl2 mods with steam

woot for valve :)

I for one will never buy a third party mod. Seems detrimental to the spirit of modding, to me.

it also makes people make kick arse mod, cuz if they dont people wont buy them. thats the point.

This was my own inital reaction exactly but I thought about it a bit more.
If a mod that wishes to charge money comes along then thats good for them - they need to create something that is not going to be found freely and is good enough for people to buy. If you spend two years working on a project like say, DoD, would you mind a bit of money for it?
But then, it brings with it almost every issue that developing a seperate game does. And if you want money for it you can't just rip textures out of the nearest mod and just tag a "OMG THNX DUDES @ MOD X FOR TEH TEXTURES" on the credits.
I guess time will reveal all.

You also have to keep in mind that Epic is in the business of developing engines and releasing good multiplay games to show off the tech. Not since Unreal 1 have they actually made a single player game. There main focus is licensing the engine to third parties and for this reason is why the Unreal engine has constantly kept there tech up to date. The upcoming version looks to match Doom3 in quality. Valve's focus is developing excellent single player games with so-so multiplayer and amazing mod community support. No other game developer supports the mod community more than them. Let us not forget that Worldcraft(now hammer) and TF(not classic) were once community applications/mods. What Valve lacks in technology updates they make up with community support. 7 years from now don't be surprised if we still using the same old HL2 tech while epic has made yearly updates to the unreal engine.
