Try this if you have fps issues with the game.

Go into your User.alx file. It can be found in C: Documents and Settings

This actually improved the performance for alot of users.
The only downside of it is that it will cause the rain to artifact when it
starts pouring.

It might be,i don't know.
I got it from the official forums.

So, what settings exactly does it affect? And will it give me playable FPS in DX9 mode, or does this config involve putting it into DX8?

Cool, thanks, I skimmed the config but didn't notice that. I'll try this.

Ok, if anyone is having performance problems in STALKER try this config now! It's like magic, I went from the game only being playable in DX8 to playing in DX9 with full dynamic lighting, no problem!

If it screws up rain, what's the point? why change one form of pain in the ass for another?

I've noticed changing settings during the game (even increasing them) actually improves performance, sometimes it doubles fps, but sometimes it cripples it. I have real poor fps with full dynamic enabled, then after changing, say, grass density to zero then back to where it was again and resuming the game, suddenly the fps have doubled.

Any idea on when the patch is out?

GameFAQS sucks. I go there and the first thread title I see is a total spoiler for me, on the level of "Snape Kills dumbledoor" lol.. except I am not really laughing about it.

Thread was deleted after a minute. But the damage was already done.

Too bad it's not going to make the characters giant squares, like the cs pack.

I don't have any performance problems

just need some cheat codes.

I went from 1gig to 2gigs of ram yesterday and that made all the diffrence in the world! I can run STALKER as well as some of my other games (SupCom, Project Reality, etc.) at full settings with little to no performance issues now. Case in point more RAM is never a bad thing!

What changes visually?

I bought it today and it runs pretty well. Almost maxed out settings (no grass shadows, some sliders moved a little to the left). It runs fairly well, but when the lightning flashes it drops to 1-2 fps. :| I suspect my graphics memory being full.. Also, no surround sound? Odd.

NEWSFLASH! PERFORMANCE BOOST SECRET TIP!!
  • TURN DOWN SETTINGS!!
OMG

THIS JUST IN AS WELL!!
  • BUY A FASTER PC
HOLY SHI-

This fixed all the hicups at maxed out settings for me. Wewt.

Changing that one line made me go from about 1 fps with max settings to 50 fps with max settings.

i just changed that 1 line too and my performance has totally smoothed out, in the options menu my lighting went to full dynamic from objects only after this change but it runs better....o_0

right now, i get random lag when i look at certain areas, when it thunderstorms, and i also get hickups ><

This is sweet and all, but I hate these damn load times. Honestly, Oblivion loaded faster!

Fix it, or I'll get the Men in Black to erase this game from existence.

OBLIVION LOADED FASTER?

I didn't know that was even possible. :O

OBLIVION LOADED FASTER?

I didn't know that was even possible. :O

With Oblivion it takes me not even 20 seconds to load areas.

With STALKER it takes about 5/7 minutes. :|

They missed the schedule? Crap, now we're gonna have to wait six years for the first patch to come out. I give up! :p

...it also sets your resolution to 1280x1024. It sounds like a quick, known way to turn down your settings to a good working configuration as opposed to finding your own balance.

I thought the same when I first saw this fix, but it does actually work. Paste the whole lot instead of just manually setting r1 to r2.

I think the main performance problem stems from the confused settings ingame - Vsync is backwards; on is off / off is on. I suspect the dynamic lights options are also the wrong way around as Objects Dynamic sticks shadows on every texture bump in the galaxy, while Full Dynamic only shadows objects and runs a lot smoother. Go figure.

Worked wonders for me. Chugged away on low at 800x600 to begin with, whacked in this new config thing and it's smooth as silk at 1280x1024 with most of the settings on. This is without all the fancy bump mapping though(9800 Pro).

Strange, this config worked wonders for me but I have no rain artifacting. Not that I'm complaining.

Rain artifacts are a separate bug, they happen randomly anyway. Save, quit to desktop and then restart the game to get rid of them.

Anyone else getting the slowdown bug?

Yeah, all the = dx9 thing does is make the game use Static Lighting.
Granted it did take my FPS from 15 to 70. lol

This game has REALLY unoptimized shadows.

It changed to full dynamic lightning? o_O For me it changed to static and from what I see that's what it's supposed to do anyway.

BTW it's originally:

renderer renderer_r2a

for me, is it cause of the patch or is that some other line?

it was originally that for me too 'renderer renderer_r2a' but when i changed just that one line in the default config it went to full dynamic and performed quite smooth, changed it to 'renderer renderer_r2'.

i didnt use the config on page 1 of this thread...when i did it turned to static.

"r2" = full dynamic, "r2a" = object lighting, "r2 = dx9" = static

r2 = dx9 is the only thing that helped my fps.
