This has frusterated me for so long now. Why don't they set a week aside, maybe even 2 days and fix the friends function. It hasn't worked almost as long as Source has been out, and we really could benifit from this. Any way I thought that maybe if we could start a petition to show them that we are serious they might look into it. So if your interested, post here, if this gets big enough then we'll send it to valve. Hopefully it will grab their attention.

It's a good idea, it's time to make it work. It would really help me keep my contacts, instead of telling them my AIM, I don't like the clutter. Id rather have a group of gamers on one message program and then my social friends on another, it would make things so much easier.

The Friends network should work like Xbox live, making it easy to buddy-up with people, and tour servers together.

If there's one thing that CS has always thrived on, it's how social it is - Valve can't neglect the potential of the Friends network, because it has the potential to become the life and blood of CS players who don't want to play alone.

Petitioning wont do a damn thing.

And if I remember correctly,

VALVE IS WORKING ON IMPROVING IT ALREADY.

Was that announced recently?

If so, cool.

If not... well, maybe in HL3.

yeah, I hardly think valve is working on this problem. I think that in the course of 1 day, a tech. could sit down at valve and hammer out the problems with the friends function. We have not seen it work in close to a year. We need this fixed.

I miss the friends thing,it kinda worked in the beginning but then got jacked, you could even play mini games through it like chess etc!

Xfire is good too but you have to close the game first if you want to join a friend on another server but not with friends you can just open it in game. :(

Gabe said in an interview that in a new build of Steam, the Friends function should work correctly.

How nice to see that you're so well versed in the workings of software development that you know exactly how long it would take.

It should work on steam 3 apparently. No point moaning about it.

What's Steam3? ...and, is it going to be included in a Steam update? :E

I think it's in one of the videos on this page -- http://cgw.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3143150 . Gabe acknowledges that Friends isn't working properly, and says that it's hard to fix it given some architectural problems with Steam 2 (the older version of Steam). But they're currently migrating to Steam 3, which doesn't have those problems and which will fix friends. In fact, right now both Steam 2 and Steam 3 are running side by side on your computer. (Hopefully the RAM consumption will go down a bit when they run just a single version of steam :) )

Just a few days ago, I noticed that the server browser mysteriously started working well again (previously for me, it'd pick up about 20% of servers, and would completely fail if you ever hit the refresh button). I think the same thing will happen with friends. But I agree that it should function more like xbox live. Valve lets you do many things with Steam/HL2, but they're all "manual" (e.g., downloading new mods, maps from the Internet); I'd like to see those things become automatic.

Valve has already stated a major update to friends will be released in the near future, so don't go getting your panties all in a bunch ;)

Oh, and if there's one thing I've learned about online petitions, it's that they never, ever, ever (say it with me now), ever, ever work. Take, for instance, this thread in the steampowered forums. We asked Valve to fix the annoying and frustrating bugs in HL2DM. Most bugs, in fact, are simple to fix, and have already been fixed by mod teams working off the HL2DM code. But nothing came as a result; only more patches for CS:S.

lol

One petition that did work (of course it was a massive petition) was when the Thief community started a petition for Eidos to release the map editor for Thief 3. Finally they gave in and released it...

And for the record, for those who don't know, Eidos follows a very, very close 2nd to EA in complete and utter worthlessness, trailed closely by Midway, as the 3rd all-time worst publisher.

Open your notebooks, class: When you hear the names EA, Eidos, or Midway associated with your favorite games, phear, and phear hard.

by near future they mean in the year 2043

When is Steam 3 likely to be released then ?? Will they just update Steam 2 or will we have to download Steam 3 individually or is this all a blur to everyone atm ??

Valve IS working on it already!

Gabe Newell said in his interview!

There was only 1 thing with the friends list that annoyed me back when 1.6 had only just started and that was the Ghosting :sniper:

It should be migrated across gradually without any notification. Apparently we are running a few features from 3 already.

I wish I could remember where I read all this stuff.

You didnt, it was in one of the Interveiws Gabe gave:E

I'd like it fixed as well, but I'm pretty sure there's more than one problem with it and valve isn't taking the time to fix 'em 'cause they think other things are more important.
