"Fake photo of Baghdad used to bolster GOP claims?"

"Howard Kaloogian (R) has posted a photograph on his campaign website which he claims to have recently taken in downtown Baghdad, to show how "calm" and "stable" the city was during his visit. Check out the photo. I am no photographic expert, but to me, this does not appear to be a photo of Baghdad (or even Iraq) at all."

This is the Google cache of the page on which the picture was originally used... since the real site seems to be getting flooded. Anyway, if you just want to go straight to the picture... this is the questionable one. Finally, these are some of the clues that reveal the true location.

I just thought it was funny enough to make a thread about it... specifically, the fact that he thought no one would notice.

Discuss.

That is absolutely shocking. Not only is it offesnsively misleading; it's deeply racist.
"Who cares? No-one'll notice - all these foreigns look the same, right?"

Clearly its not Iraq. What I want to know is what did he think a photo of a quiet part of Baghdad would prove? 'Lookie here boys! There are no explosions going on in this photo, so everything is going fine in Iraq!!'

what he wrote to accompany the photo is even worse:

"We took this photo of dowtown Baghdad while we were in Iraq. Iraq (including Baghdad) is much more calm and stable than what many people believe it to be. But, each day the news media finds any violence occurring in the country and screams and shouts about it - in part because many journalists are opposed to the U.S. effort to fight terrorism."

read some of the comments, one reader says he sees a UPS truck in the background

here's a blog from baghdad ..it gives you an idea of how bad things really are
http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/

"It really is difficult to understand what is happening lately. We hear about talks between Americans and Iran over security in Iraq, and then American ambassador in Iraq accuses Iran of funding militias inside of the country. Today there are claims that Americans killed between 20 to 30 men from Sadr’s militia in an attack on a husseiniya yesterday. The Americans are claiming that responsibility for the attack should be placed on Iraqi security forces (the same security forces they are constantly commending).

All of this directly contradicts claims by Bush and other American politicians that Iraqi troops and security forces are in control of the situation. Or maybe they are in control- just not in a good way."

"They’ve been finding corpses all over Baghdad for weeks now- and it’s always the same: holes drilled in the head, multiple shots or strangulation, like the victims were hung. Execution, militia style. Many of the people were taken from their homes by security forces- police or special army brigades… Some of them were rounded up from mosques."

and this interesting bit of info:

"I read constantly analyses mostly written by foreigners or Iraqis who’ve been abroad for decades talking about how there was always a divide between Sunnis and Shia in Iraq (which, ironically, only becomes apparent when you're not actually living amongst Iraqis they claim)… but how under a dictator, nobody saw it or nobody wanted to see it. That is simply not true- if there was a divide, it was between the fanatics on both ends. The extreme Shia and extreme Sunnis. Most people simply didn’t go around making friends or socializing with neighbors based on their sect. People didn't care- you could ask that question, but everyone would look at you like you were silly and rude."

Kaloogian should be bound and gagged, put into a UPS shipping container and mailed to Baghdad ..and any other conservative who would use Iraq to further his political career

Right. Wow.

Your in turkey. Yet you say its in Baghdad ... uhuh. Those Turkish Terrorists! Ansar Al-Turkish Sunnah! Bwah!

But, each day the news media finds any violence occurring in the country and screams and shouts about it - i
The media does the same thing in his country no doubt. Do you ever turn on the news and get flooded with happy news? No, it's always about murders, thefts, criminals, car chases. Why do people always use that crappy line

"The media only focus on the bad stuff in Iraq"

The media is there to make money. Tales of woe are so much more interesting than finding 4 lost puppies.

Funny thing is that people will vote for him anyway

This guy would have to have something seriously wrong with him if he thinks he could pass that off as baghdad. Only Geraldo can pull off stunts like that.

Without reading the post, I searched the picture looking for a turkey. I failed.

I sentence him to a month in a rough part of Iraq with a big U.S.A. flag on his jacket.

That won't get him killed. For the record Adabiviak, you think of some the worst punishment ideas I've ever heard ...

How are you so certain exactly? :dozey:
I mean, maybe it'd be 'unlikely' to get him killed. But, you know, people do get killed over there.

They go into the wrong places at the wrong time, its possible. But flags don't get someone killed. :p

If the Insurgents keep themselves consistently at 20,000 participants, out of country of like what ... 75 to 100 million? [Estimating], then its not that likely someone will be nailed just for wearing an American Flag.

Downtown Baghdad
We took this photo of downtown Baghdad while we were in Iraq. Iraq (including Baghdad) is much more calm and stable than what many people believe it to be. But, each day the news media finds any violence occurring in the country and screams and shouts about it - in part because many journalists are opposed to the U.S. effort to fight terrorism.
The photo wasn't even working on his website so I guess he pulled it down, you would think he would either quick as he possibly ****ing could - put the correct photo there or remove that whole section entirely.

Assuming he really did have that photo up there on his website and assuming it was not Bagdad:

He lied to make himself look better and made himself look like a total douche, possibly ruining his career. (This might be a good thing) It's possible it was a simple mistake like photo mix-up. Notice he said "photo WE took" meaning he didn't take it, possibly meaning he didn't even go there at all, or something to this effect.

I don't know, but the phrase he wrote next to the image just screams stupidity, "because many journalists are opposed to the US effort to fight terrorism" No I don't believe thats even true. They may be opposed to the US or opposed to the military action, but that doesn't mean that they are opposed to fighting terrorism.

Thats just horrible. People need to think about exactly what the hell they are saying when they are under the magnifying glass. You have to word everything exactly right, you can't just throw shit around like that, come on this is a website to show how great you are, not how much of a ****ing idiot you are.
