I am interested in digital photography and am contemplating buying photoshop cs. I already own FireworksMX2004 and can do a good deal of photo editing on it, however it is not designed to be a photography program and is more based around internet graphics and optimization. My question is, would it be worth spending the $270s on the academic version of photoshop cs, or should I just stick with Fireworks? Also I would like to know if there really is all THAT many things photoshop can do that Fireworks can't because I am still quite amateur, and if there are only a few neat tricks photoshop has got over fireworks I really don't mind.

Maybe there is someone out there who would like to sell me a copy of it for a cheaper price?

If you want to do something like that properly, get Photoshop, as you say, fireworks wasn't really made for that level of work.

I'm not going to use kaza, I think companies deserve to make money for their work, especially if its a good product. And Adobe Photoshop cs is the best out there.

fireworks works best as an image optimizing tool. photoshop is a must have for every photographer

Man, I feel bad, I have : Painter, Photoshop, Correll Draw, Paint Shop and all are from my local pirate store. Sorry !

the gimp is free and works great. most of it is the person behind the program. there are too many idiots with pirated photoshop that only know how to make a lens flare and a rectangle filled with color.

I am VERY experienced with Fireworks both with graphics design and working with its "limited" photo editing tools. I also have little experience with photoshop 6, so I'm not too worried about a steep learning curve; I am pretty good at teaching myself new things. GIMP compares with expensive software like photoshop and fireworks, and it is freely distributed? This is too good to be true, but tell me if it is! or if it is even reasonbly good. (please get into specifics, general responses are helpful, but I am specifics oriented person)

Could somebody who is experienced with both programs list a few of the restrictions that I am dealing with by only using Fireworks? (I am downloading the trial version from adobe as we speak)

its debatable really, GIMP has some powerful capabilities, best thing would just be to test it out and see if you like it. but with a name like gimp people don't give it much of a chance. all i know is i can do anything i need in gimp, everything is just a little different layout than photoshop though, so it takes some getting used to if you are used to photoshop.
