Physbox that breaks into smaller usable parts?

Does anyone know how to make a physbox that when you break it it kind of just break into smaller parts that doesn't fade away, just like those wooden boxes, or those pillars when you battle the antlion? I really need help with this
 
i guess you could hold the parts together with contraints and then use something to trigger the constraints to break
 
possibly a constraint of sorts, that turns it from static to dynamic when you want it to occur.
