Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, and wrote many of the band's early songs. The group's jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and the 1967 album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" - largely written by Barrett, who also played guitar - was a commercial and critical hit.

However, Barrett suffered from mental instability, exacerbated by his use of LSD. His behavior grew increasingly erratic, and he left the group in 1968 - five years before the release of Pink Floyd's most popular album, "Dark Side of the Moon." He was replaced by David Gilmour.

sad to see such an influential musician die

heh before reading the article I was sure he had died years ago. Meh without david gilmor/roger waters I doubt Floyd would be as big as they are today

Sad, but I really never cared for their material at all. Well, I kind of liked Dogs of War....

while the newer stuff was ok it's there early 70's stuff that's so great (although the Wall is still excellent)

Didn't he die July 7th? :\ Wikipedia has it down as that, with the same reasons as now, yet I'm seeing threads all over popping up today. Ah, well, its no matter. Still sad, either way. But I was never a huge fan of the older older Pink Floyd stuff to be honest.

The older Pink Flloyd stuff is by far the best.. it's psychadelic genius..

Syd Barrett RIP.. legend.

;(

Pink Floyd was pure musical genius, it's a shame to see a legend pass away, RIP.

/sigh

If only there are bands in our generation that could come within 5 miles of Pink Floyd then I'd be happy, but hey, I guess that's what makes Pink Floyd so special, there are very few in their league.

;(

Too bad he's dead, but I really don't care considering I hated Pink Floyd more than Sum 41.

I'll give him credit for starting Pink Floyd, but I'm not a fan of early Floyd

The amount of Pink Floyd haters / disbelievers makes me want to ;(

I love PF, but early Pink Floyd is horrid (Piper at the Gates of Dawn to be more specific)

holy **** did lightening just strike you dead? how can you even say those two bands in the same sentence? ewww sum 41 what a craoppy one note wonder ..pink floyd changed/influenced music for generations to come ..should sum 41 last as long the most they can hope for is annoying people for generations to come ...I mean shit man how can you compare juvenile music with musicians that other musicians aspire to be like

please never ever mention that horrid no talent band again in the same breath as PF

ANIMALS! I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO LOVED ANIMALS, COME BACK BARRET EVEN THOUGH YOU HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ANIMALS D:

Alas, another falls.

Thats odd, as I posted earlier about me preferring the Animals album alone to most of the older Pink Floyd stuff. Doesn't appear to be here now. I'm getting some really weird problems from this site recently. :\

In other Pink Floyd news, my PULSE DVD finally arrived today after 9 months of being held back due to Gilmours arrogance.

I pity our children's generation, for all they will have of the greats is the music, no memory of the era that produced it or the men and women behind it.

RIP syd, you started a great band

Let us all listen to Piper and wish you were here to honour this great musican:)

The funny thing is, even though Syd wasn't with the band during their, "golden years," all of their best work was inspired by or written about him. Wish You Were Here, Dark SIde of The Moon, and The Wall to be precise.

That's not entirely true, many people consider Piper at the Gates of Dawn to be PFs undisputed masterpiece. And I think the Wall is pretty much a musical commentary of Roger Waters life from 1977-1979.

The Wall is a mix of Waters' life as well as Syd's. Many more people have no idea there IS an album called Piper at the Gates of Dawn.:cheese:

I hope you die.

Anyway ... this is terrible news. Pink Floyd is my favorite band and it's sad to see one of the founders go.

And yeah, Animals is great, but I'm partial to The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon.

Shine On YOu Crazy Diamond is on Wish You Were Here. I was referring to albums, not individual songs.

Didn't realize there were so many Animals fans. Everyone around here isn't too big of a fan.
