nVidia cards support this and ATi don't (Probably end of the year or Q1 2005). So if buying a high end Ati card are you effectively crippling yourself even the likes of XT800 PE jobbies and will need to upgrade within next 6-12 months to be able to play new stuff at a good rate. Comments, rantings etc appreciated.

Effectively there is not a large difference between 2.0b and 3.0. So no.
ATI performs very will with it's powerful vertex and pixel shader engines. Link

No need for ranting, you just obviously have no clue about hardware whatsoever.

Sounds more like a question than a rant to me. :)

Is there any game using Pixel Shader 3.0 out now?
I thought FarCry didn't release their PS3.0 patch or something...

I think a better question would be does any game use ps2.0 even close to its potential yet?

Yeah, there are no games that I know of that currently use PS3.0. Could be wrong and yes Farcry's current version does not use PS3.0.

Nice post twat. I think perhaps you meant that I have no clue about graphics card, none the less thanks for the well thought out response. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your testicles.

hahahahaha

I've been running Far Cry with SM3.0 for a few months now. There really isn't any change in image quality but I definitely get a nice 5-10 FPS boost when I turn 3.0 on.

ive been looking for a benchmark that shows FPS with 3.0 off and on to see if it really is a big deal. the 5-10 boost, what detail is that at, and what res?

Scroll down to the 2nd graph. Shows both cards before and after. Link

A 5-10 FPS boost can be a big deal in some games. So I wouldnt call it useless. Some cases ps3.0 will give even more.

A lot of people seem to pass of ps3.0 as useless because it only gets about 5-10FPS faster in the games that support it but then when you have your ATI vs Nvidia and One company comes out 1% faster then the other card in counterstrike source its a huge deal and everyone wants to go return their other card so they can increase their FPS buy 1%

PS3.0 is not useless and it can give a decent FPS boost, and with that FPS boost you may be able to increase your image quality buy upping the resoultion. Ps3.0 may not be directly linked to image quality improvements but the faster your FPS the higher detail you can run your game at.

The only thing useless about ps3.0 right now is very view games support it. The farcry patch has been taking forevor, and I have no idea when we will see stalker, I have no idea if doom 3 uses ps3.0, EA announced they will not be using ps3.0 anymore, and the half life 2 patch is a long way off.

Well if you notice in the benchmark ATI runs 2.0b and yet even with the 3.0 Nvidia cannot pass. So it isn't just a question of PS3.0's performance but 3.0's performance on Nvidia hardware vs 2.0 performance on ATI's hardware which generally does a little better. Now if ATI supports 3.0 with their pixel/vertex shader core that would go a little farther yet. :O

Why do those bencmarks show ATI running in 3.0 mode?

I just realized but the drivers they are using are reall really old. I would be nice if someone found the old farcry patch and bencmarked it with the newer ATI drivers against some of the newer NVIDIA drivers.
