Planetside... World destruction!!!!

Not sure how many of you lot play planetside but if you've been playing over the past two days or so you will notice that there's been a few strange things going on. Every now and again meteor showers rain from the sky killing off huge amounts of players and sometimes we even feel the occasional earthquake that disrupts the battle by making it impossible to aim... and its getting worse! Eventually on monday night this will culminate in the near destruction of auraxis (the planetside planet) where one of the islands will be destroyed and split into 4 mini islands!

Ive experienced 2 earthquakes so far of varying magnitude but i have yet to see a meteor shower... has anyone else experienced them?
 
To merely state how cool it is that they can dynamically change the gameworld.
 
wow. i wanted to see stuff like that when i originally played. good to hear they've finally caught on.

must be very chaotic and a grand spectacle to be part of. :)

as a side note, i bet it's that middle island (forgotten it's name!) that's going to split. the one with the mountain/volcano in the middle.

hmm, have the devs mentioned any other events like this? cos if life is gonna be interesting on Auraxis again, i wanna renew my account! :D

Its actually Oshur which is the bottom middle one next to the NC sanctuary.,.

I played the planetside free trial and I had quite a lot of fun with it. Good battle dynamics, was fun to race around in the vehicles. I'm not sure if I'd pay a monthly subscription for it though, I'm not sure how long it would hole my interest.

Earthquakes and stuff sound cool anyway!
 
How many players are there online for planetside? I thought the game died.

i took these on the northern part of oshur right near a base. the lightning looking things in background are an artillery gun or something

yeah, one time a harraser was driving on the road, all of the sudden meteors slammed against it and blew it up, the good thing was it was an enemy!
 
I liked Planetside then my free trial ran out. LOVE the Idea, (have a buncha friends who are addicted to it) but the fact that you have to play to get killed over and over again gets on my nerve >.>.

Did they add in the huge capitol bases they were talking about a few months ago? Thats around the time I quit playing...
 
Nice idea but meh thats nowt compared to the surprises we have in store with sourceworld

And you don't have to pay £10 a month to play sourceworld :)
 
Could some one fill me in? I don't know much about planetside, is it a true first person shooter? I've heard you could have hundreds of people fighting on screen at a time? Is this true?

yes, its a first person shooter. there can be 100 people and up on a single contient


it gets fustrating cause its hard to get a kill

there are vehicles. which you have to certify by using certifacation points

i have some images of some really hot spots! and other stuff too

looks like quite a bit of fun, seems real team based correct? If so, whats the main objective, just kill the other team? Capture their base or something like that?

yeah, its real team based, you have squads,platoons,outfits

the game is about capturing bases and controlling continents
which you have to hack the control terminal and wait 15 minutes and you capture
or hack the control terminal and take an object called a LLU and take it to the nearest base before 15 minutes

as i said its real team based, you need your team to capture a base. if the enemy outnumbers you, your in bad stuff...
 
I got some screens from last night of a meteor shower... Our galaxy (Airborne troop transporter) got caught right in the middle of the shower and took a direct hit so we advanced on foot towards the base all the while dodging incoming Meteors!!!

yea it was.... to sum up those screens our outfit was on the way to that base in the first screenshot so we could 'hotdrop' from the galaxy transport onto the roof. We were nearly there when the meteor storm started and we found ourselves bang in the middle of it... Our platoon leader gave the order to bail there and then from the aircraft which half the squad managed to do but for the rest it was too late as the Galaxy was taken out by a direct meteor hit! As I was landing i noticed the remains of the galaxy following me down and i only just avoided it as i landed. 5 seconds later i was killed by a meteor myself! So i spawned at the tower you see in the pics and made my way to the nearby enemy base whilst doing my best to dodge incoming meteors. As you can see in the last few pics i had made it all the way to the top floor on the enemy base and was just about to go inside when i looked up and saw a meteor comign right at me... they travel at such a speed that i had no time to avoid it so i died right after...

RIP Auraxis, auraxis, i dont know what happend but auraxis is destroyed... but now continents are seperate planets.
 
Planetside owned when i played it, for my free month i got with an outfit and became a galaxy pilot / hacker, man it was fun :D if MMO's were a bit cheaper i would love to carry on playing.
 
I was there at the end, Oshur was population locked so everyone was standing around in the sanc, the meteors and earthquakes were getting stronger then a game dev made a message saying server is going down in 30 min for a patch. We waited and then the big one hit, it lasted around 5min and shook the screen violently then a computer message/voice system started saying what was going on something like "Fuel rods entering core, transformation in progress, core tep rising, bending process complete." Then the server went down, we got the patch and a nice 'lil movie explaining what had happened.

It was pretty cool.
 
Cool! Have they balanced the gamepley properly yet?
 
God damn I wish I had the money...

When I played the free month trial thing I became a pretty good advanced hacker and a mosi pilot. I could also drive a buggy and I had the melee implant and some other stuff I cant remember. :)

I did pretty well according to me comanding officer considering I was only there for a month.


God damn I loved sneaking arround active enemy bases knifeing people and hacking the base terminals getting my mosi and wreaking havok! :D



Insanely fun game for me because I loved the team ellement and the way thousands of people ALL pull together for one cause....


It was fantastic!



Then my trial ended.... and my mum wouldnt pay the monthly fee...

So even If I started now I wouldnt have the stuff I did have because I played the trial about a year ago lol....

Aww well... If I come into money... I know what I'm doing.... Btw I was the purple doods!! :)
 
I wish I had the money as well :(

I tried getting into the beta but back then my computer wasn't quite good enough. I never did get the free trial...Is it still abailable?
 
Yeah, I reckon the trial will still be there.

Before you do get the trial Farrow, tell me and I'll try and whipe all traces of the thing from my PC.

I want to see how its changed. :)



(Allthough I doubt I will actually be able to get rid of it...)

Pretty much. All the empires have thier own strengths and weaknesses but theres been several balance changes recently which mean that no one empire is stronger than another from what i can see where as before the terran republic were considerably weaker when confined within a base as the Vanu weaponry has a lot of splash damage and the New Conglomerate weaponry is just ridiculously over powered at close range. So theres been a few balance changes which buff the VS slightly whilst giving an even larger round of buffs the the terrans who now have vastly improved max units!
 
Yeah, planetside has lots of technical support in that respect. Tweaks are frequent, and the game has progressed a lot since my brother bought it a year ago.
 
too bad the 30 day trial isnt even free.... its $10 and thats only $4 les sthan the regular monthly fee.... damn i wanted to try it but Im not gonna just jump in and play :(. Am i misreading or something? is there a FREE trial or what? :(
 
*sigh* i've always wanted to play planetside but i just can't afford such a large amount of money a month, i think it was like $20 canadian last time i checked, man. maybe i'll cave one of these days.
 
it works out to be £8 a month for me and i can earn £65 for working 6 hours on a sunday its not a problem for me...
 
Some great pics there Matt, really get across how cool it must have been.

For those bothered about the costs of planetside. Sourceworld will have things like this in, and its free. Ok its not made to be played like this, but we're certainly putting in the options for people who want to.

Unforgivable plug, I'd ban myself cept I can't :E

But anyway, if I ever give in and get a credit card, I might check planetside out, it does look pretty cool and sounds like a lot of the bugs it used to have, have been removed for some time now.
