Playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for the first time

So I'm playing STALKER for the first time and I've heard that, like Oblivion, mods are very much helpful for getting the most out of this game. So should I play vanilla the first time or should I get some tweak mods?

Just patches and no mods Riomhaire. Though the float 32 mod probably won't do you any harm. Ignore these 'play it the way the devs wanted it to be played!!!' mother****ers. The devs are very much still in business, if they wanted the game a particular way, they'd of released it that way. Vanilla the first time at least.

Mmmm Stalker.

Started off in love. By the end, it was a nasty divorce.

The only game I forced myself to finish only because I had invested so much time in it already... with the small hope it would get better in the end.

Vanilla the first time. I recommend Float32.

Call me a snotty purist, but I would recommend playing it through the first time on Vanilla.
Then try the mods.

Did you change the in-game file thingy to say yes?
If you did everything the readme told you to, reinstall STALKER and try again. That's how I fixed it.

Did the developers mean for some side quests and whatnot to be broken? Look for mods that don't do anything to the original storyline - bug fixes only.

Awhile back I started a Post called "Stalker Stories". In it, I talk about the various mods that are out & describe a few of the better ones. I would advise for you to look through it. You might find some useful info. Most here will tell you to play through the game vanilla the first time. While good advice, I, on the other hand, advise for you to install a mod that adds features that interest you, even if you know nothing about the game or it's story, as I felt the stock game itself was very boring.

I do however, advise you to stay away from the Total Conversions though on your first time through, like the "Nuclear Snow" or "Priboi" TC or other such conversions.
