So, I did it. I broke down. I traded in the 360 and went for the PS3. I really wanted a blu-ray player, and trading in the 360 made it the cheapest blu-ray player around. Plus, not paying for online is a huge bonus.

So, I bought SOCOM IV (SOCOM II was my favorite online shooter EVER, and this is looking like its going to be even better) and Killzone 2. Both look stunning on my new 1080P 120hz 42" flat screen (Its a vizio, suck it. The XVT series is really high quality : price ratio, its the best picture i've seen sub $1000).

I come to you fellow PS3 owners looking for quality co-op games. Or just your recommendations in general.

I realize the game selection is 'limited' in comparison to 360 so don't whine about that.

Also, my PSN name is TCfromBN...

Input GO:

The game that has not left my PS3 since I got it in late February is Demon's Souls.

You will have to import it as it is only available in Japan, China, and Korea. That said, the Asian (Chinese) and Korean versions have all English text and voices, so you will not know the difference.

It is essentially a medieval game of exploration and combat, most often described as a 3D Symphony of the Night. Whatever you call it, it is my favorite PS3 game to date. You can read all about it at the wiki here. There is also a great thread on the NeoGaf forums about it here.

A little bit from the wiki about the online features (which are the coolest thing in the world):
Messages

Demon's Souls offers a special kind of Educational multiplayer that acts as a tool for players to help other players. By utilizing a stock selection of messages involving monsters, locations, situations, items, and various other subjects, players can leave Twitter-esque messages on the ground for other players to view. Not only that, but these messages can also be marked with a grade! Messages that receive high grades can heal their writer and stay present on the ground much longer than incorrect or unhelpful messages.

Co-op

In Demon's Souls, players can team up with two(three?) other players online to form a trio of adventurers for a single level! The host (must be in physical body form) need to find a blue text marker (which is left by players in soul form using "Blue Eye Stone"). You can check how many times that player was online and their ranking score percentage. Then you can choose to summon that player, he will show up in its "blue" phantom form. After beating demon boss, the blue phantoms will be granted their physical body back, but will not progress in story (for example you will not get trophy for beating boss in blue phantom form, you have to beat it in your own game).

All three players receive Souls for their hard work and can team up to take out Bosses even faster and with better efficiency, but it appears that you may only play levels Co-Op in levels that have not been rid of their Boss Demon yet. When the Boss Demon in the Host's game is complete, the two Phantom adventurers who joined the Host's adventure return to their own adventures where they left off! As the Co-Op game ends, each player is permitted to rate the other player on a Grade system which carries with the adventurer. So other players can know how good (or bad) a certain player is.

PvP

Demon's Souls has a second stone though, it's called the "Black Eye Stone" and it has a slightly different function than the Blue Eye Stone. It allows a player to force their way into another adventurer's game to take the place of that area's Boss Demon! The adventurer who uses the Black Eye Stone becomes the "Black Phantom" and must either be defeated by the defending adventurer or kill the adventurer to gain Souls! Just imagine the terrifying fear an adventurer may feel when they come face-to-face with another adventurer, iron clad in the best gear, with blood-thirsty intent!

ps. if you fail to kill the host, or somehow die by environment of stage (falling, fireball in 1-x) but not by hosted or blue phantom, your lv will decrease by this will decrease your highest stats point and soul level.

Looks really interesting. Though I'm not a huge fan of the whole swordplay thing in games, how does it work out? I watched a video and combat looked like a bland, button mashing fest, but I can't be sure.

What about coop shooters or other actions games?

I'm guessing that Resistance 2 might be at the top of that list...?

Darkside:

"I realize the game selection is 'limited' in comparison to 360 so don't whine about that." - me

Also, I loved that.

Little Big Planet... um, I guess that's just about it.

The combat is DEEP. That is what keeps me coming back day after day. Blocking, Parrying, dodging, rolling, shield bashing, slicing with swords, mashing with hammers and maces, dual-wielding katanas, magic bows and arrows, long spears, pick axes, great swords, loads of unique magical weapons and weapon upgrades, lots of stats to improve, spells/miracles to learn, HUGE bosses, immersive and realistic environments (some huge and open, some small and confining). All in all, one of the best games I have ever played.

Oh, and if you button-mash, you will die QUICK. :E

Call of Duty: WaW
Army of Two
Rainbow Six Vegas 2

(all 3 have co-op in split screen or online)

You can get GTA4 and play it like it's "co-op", where it's you and your friends are together against the police.

Red Alert 3 has online co-op.

Resistance 1 - split screen co-op and co-op campaign
Resistance 2 - split screen co-op no co-op campaign

It's really that good, Victim? I've been tempted to pick this up for a while and finding it has co-op has nearly swayed me. Have you tried co-op? It run well/slow/buggy?

The co-op is what really keeps this game going so strong. When you are in body form, you can summon other players who are in soul form to help beat whatever level you are in. When you are in soul form you can either go help another player who is in body form or invade another player's world as a black phantom to kill the player and get your body back. It's awesome.

The game runs great 96% of the time. You will see, however, slowdown when a lot of furniture is breaking onscreen and you are playing with 2 other phantoms or if everyone decides to use spells with big effects, but for the most part there is no noticeable slowdown.

resistance 2 has co-op multiplayer

I recommend:

resistance 1 and 2
littlebigplanet
mgs 4
killzone 2
uncharted

EDIT: for got some PSN games for good measure

echochrome
flower
warhawk

I'm pretty sure Resistance 2 has a co-op campaign, no?

Unfortunately it doesn't. TBH I was kind of furious when I found this out after buying the game. This was my favorite part of Part 1. The co-op in 2 is much different and a lot of fun, but I wish the campaign was available.

Ah yes, Uncharted. I meant to pick that up but forgot it existed the day i went to pick up the PS3...

So my co-op games are limited, to like a few eh?

I guess Resistance 1 is something I'll be checking out then.

I could have sworn I've seen reviews talking about co-op campaign on Resistance 2...

Yeah, I've already got Killzone 2. I really like the feel of the game. I've got SOCOM IV, so I've got my MP fix as well. Though I do hear good things about Warhawk, so maybe sometime in the future I'll check it out.

MAG is supposed to be coming out this year, and the word is it'll support 256 player battles.

It sounds like it'll be a lot like BF2 without the vehicles.

Little Big Planet is fun and cute but FFS this is a game that spouts on and on about being the ultimate in being creative and imaginitive, but makes you sit through hundreds of soul-destroying tutorials before you're allowed make anything. I CAN FIGURE OUT HOW THE **** THE RADIOS WORK ON MY OWN THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Res Evil 5 is good, as long as you can find someone to play it with. Co-op is a must.

MGS4 has great gameplay. Too bad that makes up only a third of the game.

So, is little big planet as entertaining as everyone is making it out to be?

Don't get me wrong, its really fresh stuff, but is it something that you'll always want to go back to?

Also, I'm going to look into Resistance 2. I hear that it's heavily based on a class system, but it looks kinda strange.

I think my best bet for some good coop action is Resident Evil... But even that isn't what I'm really looking for.

Maybe Vegas 2...?

Times when LBP is brought up I wish I'd saved that MSPaint comic about having to pay $4.99 for good levels and all the free content is crap.

First congrats on your PS3, but now that you are part of the club, get it out of your head that the PS3 has less games, 100% false not only do we have better exclusives but all the major titles are now on both systems.

As for good coop.

Resident Evil 5 (I liked it, some people dont)
LittleBigPlanet (up to 4 players insane amount of content)
Resistance 2 (Its Sven COOP in the resistance world)
Resistance 1 (For real campaign coop)

As for over all GREAT games. (exclusives)

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Resistance 1/2

I didn't like Vegas 2 seemed to fake and repetitive. Vegas 1 on the other hand was great.

Thanks, I meant to get Uncharted, but I'm not sure that I want to fork all kinds of cash out for games right now. So I've gotta be really picky, for now anyway.

I'll probably end up renting Resistance 2 this weekend, or 1 if they don't have it in stock, to see how I like it. Comparing it so Sven COOP is a huge plus for me, I love it to death. It's mindless awesomeness.

Yeah, I don't think that the PS3 is 'limited' in game selection, the exclusives are just a little different. I can deal with that. I think its a superior -console- (not to be mistaken for a superior game selection, though it isn't far behind in any way) from an overall perspective, having owned both.

Here's a pointer: Don't be afraid to buy used PS3 games. Blu-ray disks, unlike DVDs and CDs, are extremely scratch resistance thanks to a new type of protective coating. I've purchased 3 of my games used from ebay each for under $20 and they were all in perfect condition, including the cases and manuals.

More info about Res 2 Co-op.

3 classes. Medic, Soldier and Spec Ops. It has RPGish elements to it as you can improve each class' equipment over time the more you play.

I want to say there are 8 or so maps. Probably takes 30 minutes or so to get through the earlier maps. There are maybe 8 sections to each map which you'll encounter in a random order each time so the maps play differently and you don't encounter every section every time through.

You don't really stand a chance if you don't have balanced classes or if someone doesn't play their class properly. The more people you have, the more enemies they throw at you. With 2 players you'll want a spec ops and a medic.

Spec Ops doles out ammo to everyone has a nice burst rifle out of the gate. Relatively weak, health wise.

Soldiers can create temporary shields for the players to hide behind and fire through and are like the tank class that can take more damage. They start with a chain gun out of the gate.

Medic heals by shooting an area effect weapon, quickly revive fallen teammates and can put down temporary regen zones. They also start with a carbine rifle out of the gate. They can use grenades.

All in all it's a pretty nice co-op setup.
