I keep getting an engine error when trying to play hl2 or cs source.

it goes: internal drive error in IDirect3D device 9 :: Present()

I reinstalled directx9.0c
Ive changed my resolution and changed from 32bit to 16bit

I am at an impass. I have never seen this error.
Please help a girl in need.

in order to overcome your impasse I would recommend installing or reinstalling the latest drivers for your video card and if that doesn't work then reinstalling half-life 2.

reloaded hl2 and steam. i still get the same messege error

its SiS 3d force s-128 quad. compatible with directx 9.0c

do you have the latest drivers for that card? I wouldn't know where to get them, I've never even heard of that brand.

i do have to most recent drivers. i also uninstalled and reloaded my video drivers. Its made by Jaton.. the SiS video card

Is it actually a card or an onboard graphics chipset?

i do not really understand. but i physically installed the graphics card into my cpu slot. is that what you are asking?

You installed a graphics card into a CPU slot? Right...

Look, click Start in the left bottom of the screen, then find and click Run, in the new window type DxDiag. A window soon will appear. Click on the tag "Display". Remember the "Chip Type", and type it in here.

Ah....

This may be the problem, its less powerfull that a GeForce 2 MX

Half life 2 won't work with that, sorry.

so are u telling me i need a geforce or i wont be able to play the game?

Pretty much yes, SiS onboard GPUs lack the power to play HL2.

I'm sorry. I'm sure you can get a nice graphics card for cheap though.

1.2 GHz Processor
256MB RAM
DirectX 7 capable graphics card
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection

They do. See, your card isn't hardware DirectX7.

i think the SIS Mirages are the best u can get

I got a Geforce FX5700 256MB for £50, runs half-life 2 on full, works great

That card showed up for about $30 bucks on some google search.

Your card is probably not good enough to run HL2.

As a last ditch attempt to get it running, you could try starting HL2 with the command parameter '-dxlevel xx', and use either 70, 80, or 81 instead of xx.This will force HL2 to use Directx 7.0, 8.0, or 8.1 shaders instead of 9.0c.

To do this, right click on Half Life 2 in Steam go to launch options, and type exactly '-dxlevel xx' with xx as whatever value you want to try. I'm not too optimistic about it working, to be honest. If it does work, it will be ugleh.

If the graphic cards aren't able to produce Direct X 8, or 9 quality, it rolls back to the version the video can produce. So writing that in console is useless.

And SiS performs poorly even with Direct X 7. Seriously. It's worse than GeForce 2 MX, which runs HL2 very poorly.

My card is directx9 compatible, which is the recommended, not the required...

regaurdless... they say its a T&L problem and that is written on the box. BS, go try and find on the box that you need a t and l card

^^

Yes, yes, but your card can not RUN dx9.0!

It's not advanced enough, and it will not even run directx 7.0.

Try to download DirectX 9 then just to see if it works. If it says it's DX9 compatible then it should run with the DX9 software installed. It won't be pretty but it might work.

most likely it wont run it because ur card can do any kind of shading

Oh, that might be the problem. I'd suggest installing the cpu in the cpu slot and the graphics card in the AGP slot (or PCI it depends). :)

But seriously, what they said. Your card may not be able to run DX7.

You really shouldn't expect any new game to work well if your Graphics card is not from ATI of GeForce. Especially if it's intergrated. (sp?)

Being able to install DirectX9 on your PC is very different to actual DirectX9 capability. Sure the packaging is badly explained: Vivendi Universal are just that stupid. You need a microscope to determine the fact that a net connection is compulsary for instance. Nevertheless, your card is not DirectX9 compatible, probably not even DirectX7 compatible.

I'd recommend getting a new video card, but i'm always loathe to do so when a relatively inexperienced person comes forward with a problem caused by an obscure and out of date card. You could change the video card, but chances are the rest of the components inside are obscure, cheap and incompatible with anything truely worth having. You're probably better off getting/building an entirely new PC, because it sounds like your current one would be only be able to run HL2 after being gutted... and possibly exorcised as well :/

Edit: And though I go against a room full of PC fanatics in saying so, perhaps you're just better off waiting for the X-Box version of the game? Even if you don't own an X-Box, they're hardly the most expensive items to pick up, especially second hand. A lot of hassle to play one game sure, but only as much hassle as getting an entirely new PC is going to be :/

Onboard sucks, and it probably uses shared system memory which of course reduces your... ...you guessed it, system memory. Go buy a 9600XT. They are fairly cheap now. If you want to play HL2 at a decent frame rate.

depends if he has an agp slot because most intigrated pcs dont have agp like mine im forced to use stupid pci

Buy a Radeon X800xt 256MB PCI express.
It will run Great.

I think the SIS 315 does have T&L. It might even be considered a DX7 card. Have you installed DX9b or DX9c yet? Do you have the newest SIS drivers?

What these guys are trying to explain is that being DX9 compatible does not mean it will display DX9 code but rather just be compatible with the DX9 software installed. Sorta irrelevent just to get it to run considering HL2 needs the card to be able to display DX7 code (which includes T&L) to run and not DX9.

If you can't get it to run, buying a cheap 50$ card from the store will get it to run. Buying an 80$ card will get GFXs looking a lot better. If you are not sure what slots are in your machine then get a PCI card. If you know you have an AGP slot then get an AGP card as it will be faster.

Well, my SiS says on the box directx9 t&l... but thats besides the point. I guess it just wont work. As far as being a slow computer?? what ever my dad owns a computer store. he brought me home a chaintech geforce fx 5200. we will see how that works.

I do have a pentium 4 processor with 512mg ram.
