please help - i've just built my first rig and i've still got my old pc as well. i was wondering if I can create more than one partition on my new 80gig hard drive and copy across my old hard drive onto it keeping another one fresh?? I don't really understand how partitioning works. if i do this will it slow down my using of the clean partition?

With my 40gigs HD I use a 5 gigs partition for Windows XP only (and all the stuff that has to be put in the Windows folder, internet explorer plugins, windows updates, internet temp etc... ) One 1.5 gigs for paging ( I set it manually to 1 gig min and 1 gig max ) and the remaning space is another partition for my softwares and games... On my other HD I put the stuff that doesn't have to be installed (Mp3, Zipped files, Movies etc...)

if you mean, can you copy the operatiing system from the old rig to the new one, you can but i wouldnt reccomend it, mainly cos you're using different hardware, and copying over doesnt always work. If you're doing a new install of the OS, you should set aside 10gb for c: drive for windows and do what you want with the other 70. once you've installed the OS you can easy copy the files over from your old rig by using a network (if you have a card in each pc) or plugging the old hard disk into the new one as a slave drive, and just copy the right files, then put the old disk back in the old rig... hope this helps
