PLEASE HELP firewall nightmare!

So I've just got HL2 game of the year edition, and when I installed (and ran) it I got the message

"steam.exe (main exception): unable to load library Steam.dll "

as I see alot of people have been getting.

I suspect I am getting this error because I'm currently "living-in" university at the moment, and as such I am at the mercy of their firewall.

Is there anyway I can connect to steam through a different port (i.e. one that is open), then set it to offline mode? or do something else?

Please help, I'm desperate to play the game!

Here is a link to the Steam Support Page for network troubleshooting. Test your connection to Steam and make sure the required ports are open.

yea so when I try the test I just get

"The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. "

which I presume means "TEST FAILED!", which is what I expected. So is there no way round it? Is it the case that the game just isn't playable by people inside protected networks... thats pretty weak isn't it?

You can try getting to the site through a proxy.
Try http://www.proxifyme.com/ . But your needed ports are probably blocked by the network.

How would I go about trying this?


Also, is it true that if I take my P.C. out of my network (to say a friends house), connect to steam, then I can set it to some kind of "offline mode" whereby I will be able to play within my network again?
