Please help, want to make realistic outdoor terrain!!!

Can someone please please please explain how to make nice looking outdoor terrain with hills and things..


I would appreciate any help! :)
 
Ahh, I get it now, thanks BigCheese.

Marksman just forget my above post. To make terrain, just make a flat surface and under it's texture properties select the surface you want to deform. Go into Displacement, click on Create, then Paint Geometry. Then a window will come up, giving you different options and such. Just experiment! Hella fun.

I knew it had something to do with displacement... but I wasnt really sure. :)



Time to spend some time messing arround! :D
 
When using blend**** texture you can paint on displacement maps, but I haven't figured out how yet, does anyone know how to use blend textures
 
Does anyone have any more info? I think the displacement map support is pretty poor as there doesn't appear to be a way to import a heightmap and use that. I've found a program that can take a heightmap and turn it into a map for Hammer, so that's definitely getting me on my way. However, what about dynamic tesselation and geomod support? Does the engine not include anything like that? I found a listing of an entity in HL 2 that might relate to it (the entity of terrain morph).

It doesn't seem to be working for me either.
