what os? windows 95/98 i assume? theres not really anyway to do it...win98 isnt secure....the best i could recommend is setting up a little registry setting so that if you press cancel it will instantly log you out, if basically won't let you in unless you enter a user/pass, but even that isnt very secure, if you want something secure check out win2k/winxp or perhaps one of the easy to use linux distros (mandrake, fedora, etc). of course if you want to shell out money there is software for win98 that can add security features similar to win2k/xp...

i would NOT use DSL if you have 95/98/ME , you are wide open to all sorts of problems, not mention no support, XP is the only way to go, if your machine is too slow for XP try windows 2000, its requirements are very low. also do not use a USB DSL modem if you can help it either, your problem may be related to a USB boot delay if your DSL is on it. try to get on PPPoE this uses 10/100 ethernet MUCH better.

as long as there are network card drivers for win95/98/me then there is "support" for dsl, cable, etc. i've not seen any problems specifically related to dsl on win9x, and his question wasnt about that anyways.
