Hi,
I think my processor is too slow and is holding my system back.

It's a 1.7 ghz, with 1 gb of ram and a 9800 pro. What would you all recommend for a processor? (Realistic prices please, maybe about $200 US for processor and motherboard).

i dont really know about prices and so on, but i have a p4 2.53 GHZ, i think its like 2nd or 3rd best out there, so it shouldnt be as expensive as the 3.0 GHZ + cards.

good luck (try newegg.com?)

If you can stretch a Athlon64 2800+ with a motherboard would be fantastic and you would see a huge improvement in how you play your games. I think 2800 and a mobo would be about the $250 mark though.

edit: Just specced the 2800 with the mobo in my sig (the epox, very good imo) and it came to $214 before tax.

People, you have to have opinions.
Also, does anyone know whta the "c" means after "2.4C Ghz" on a P4 processor?

I think it means Celeron. If you can upgrade your processor and mobo to atleast P4 2.2ghz, that should run hl2 fine... i think. Amd Ahtlon 2500+s are cheap.

C is the stepping of the chip. Basically it tells you what core it's using. No - it's not Celeron. A P4 != Celeron.

You state 1.7Ghz...what motherboard are you using (aka what socket does it have) and is it an AMD or Intel chip?

you can get an amd64 system for around $200. i just got this combo for a friend:

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80698-R

comes out to about $213

the a64 2800+ is very fast too, dont be fooled by the actual number. heres some gaming benches http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=33&type=expert&pid=6

and that mobo isn't a cheapo by any means. comes with 5.1 surround onboard, and actually has some nice OC features.
