I have put steam on my comp for the 1st time, the small 1mb installer and then it says updating but i get the error message.

Fatal error - could not connect to any

any ideas?

I'm not to sure, you could try downloading one of the full steam install files (here: http://www.steampowered.com/getsteamnow.htm)
Other than that no idea.. sorry..
