Pointlessly in-dept look at Stewie from Family Guy

Peter and Lois almost never understand Stewie. It's not that they can't hear him, it's just that their brains are saying "babies years olds don't talk like that". When Stewie says "Give me the mind control device or I will kill you" what Lois hears is "I want my toy!". People seem to understand him properly either when they aren't paying attention or when they are completly focusing on him. When they are focusing on something else or completly focused on what he was saying they don't realise that he's a baby and just accept what he's saying. People also seem to react more when he gives an order. Brian always understands him, being a talking dog probably means he can accept strange thing more easily (though nobody seems to find a talking dog strange). Of course people always understand him when he's acting like a baby (like when he's messing with Cleevlends hair) Chris (and possibly Meg) seem to understand him more than others, possibly because he's too stupid to realise that babies don't talk like that. Throw-away characters seem to always understand Stewie, maybe they just think he's a midget.

it's a cartoon show. simple as that. but you have a point in your pointless essay, the amount of "common sense" you get as you grow up directly relates to your ability to understand what Stewie says.

I doubt there's much thought behind this, the understanding of Stewie's words by others changes as is convenient to the writers. Like how the Simpson's Springfield is sometimes at sea and other times in the mountains.

I like the characters of Stewie and Brian, how they can be super intelligent at one point and at the next be a total baby/dog.

I find it weird how people can watch a cartoon show and hate it because, "It's too unrealistic." I mean, wow, it's a cartoon, why would you make it realistic.
