China is building a high-tech police state under a massive surveillance and censorship program: "Golden Shield," linking surveillance cameras, the Internet, phones, facial-recognition software, voice recognition data from phone calls, GPS monitoring, and facial photos into a centralized database for every person in China--1.3 billion faces.

Some 200,000 surveillance cameras have already been installed throughout the city of Shenzhen, with a total of 2 million CCTVs planned, making it the most watched city in the world. It will be connected to a single, nationwide network, an all-seeing eye.

More detail in the article.

I wonder how many GBs it'll use.

I guess they don't actually all look the same after all.... waitresses I mean.

Sounds like they're trying to emulate the UK...

I lol'd.

I wish I knew what this thread was about.

I wish I didn't get infractioned for this post.

and comunists all over the world eyaculated

All the whilst, the North Koreans are looking for an outlet they can connect this "database" to. But then again, the outlets there are mostly for show.

The UK is the most spied on country in the world, by quite some considerable margin. This is common knowledge.

There is a bit of a difference between the Chinese and UK survelliance. Here it is not used to control the people ;)

No, they use even more oppressive but subtle techniques, including feudal laws that should have been abolished long ago.

Also for those who don't know, Shenzhen is a Special Economic Zone which is near the border of Hong Kong which has been the place where China initially trys it's economic experiments (I believe they trialled capitalism here).
With this ultra-modern booming city, which is probably the first place most people visit when they come from Hong Kong there has been a boom in crime too.

I guess they are experimenting with CCTV in order to cut the crime.
I wouldn't say that Shenzhen is an oppressive place though, nor does it have any intention of being oppressive.

Seriously people, do some research before you say "Oh no, China is oppressing people again!"

The UK is only a free society if you have no aspirations to be anything beyond an obedient, docile consumer who is happy to take public transport everywhere, if you don't care how completely undemocratic the government or the EU is, and if you don't mind being watched and having tons of personal information held by the government.

But deporting people because you don't like their religion is your idea of being free, right?

Uh, whatever you say. This has ignorant and irrelevant rant written all over it. I'm really not in the mood.

i'd really like to see into the mind of the person who proposed this idea.

does he have some extreme fetish? or is he just too terrified of loosing his privileged position? i seriously don't understand this mentality.

ITT words of kirov wisdom are ignored? Anyway. Vageta is banned lol.

You can always emigrate and start a hippy commune in Africa if you want true equality and freedom.

Sorry, too busy watching Storm Repiv. Makes Saxon look like a kindergarten kid!

The only thing I could think when I read this is that if they coupled this database with the latest facial animation software, they could create a version of Michael Jackson's Black or White music video that loops on into infinity.

Just without the black... or white.

Yeah the UK sucks, down with the Queen!!

They're hooking it up to the internet. Hackers will now be able to assume the identities of 1.3 billion people.
