many politicians have said some amazing things over the years (either amazingly stupid, amazingly smart, amazingly perceptive, whatever). I thought we could put a few here, please dont make em too long, and don't limit them to modern times. Tell us why you like it, what its context is, and whether it still applies in modern society (if its not a modern quote)

"If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people - their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties - someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if they is what the mean by a 'Liberal,' then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal.'" - John Fitzgerald Kennedy

my fave JFK quote

"We look forward to hearing your vision, so we can more better do our job. That's what I'm telling you." —George W. Bush, Gulfport, Miss., Sept. 20, 2005

my fave GW Bush quote (this week)

"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel." - Samuel Johnson

When you have no moral, practical, or ethical grounds for your case, you can still call upon patriotism to justify your actions and gain support. It's relevancy today is more than obvious.

Are you saying patriotism is wrong? Are you that stupid?

Yes, that's exactly what I said.

How about you make an effort to understand the post?

I simply couldnt agree more. In fact I think i'm going to add that to my list of favourite quotes ever. Here are some others:

'I submit to you that if a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.' - Martin Luther King, Jr

'Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it's just the opposite' - JK Galbraith

Also, please see my sig.

I guess he counts as being involved in politics:

"The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; and worship without sacrifice."
- Mahatma Gandhi

The next one isn't very political... but important in his own way:

"Beyond its entertainment value, 'Baywatch' has enriched and, in many cases, helped save lives. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to continue with a project which has had such a significance for so many."
- David Hasselhoff

David Hasselhoff brought down the Berlin Wall.

"민주위장 좌익사범 살펴보고 신고하자"

translation:
"Watch out for liberal criminals disguised as democracy supporters and report them to police."

- South Korean Propaganda sign

Ooh! Ooh! I found a new one:

"David Hasselhoff brought down the Berlin Wall."

“I came to America because of the great, great freedom which I heard existed in this country. I made a mistake in selecting America as a land of freedom, a mistake I cannot repair in the balance of my lifetime.”
— Albert Einstein, 1947

excellent quote and good explanation! i completely agree

"Just as war is freedom's cost, disagreement is freedom's privilege." -Bill Clinton

(i wish more posters would realize this quote is true)

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

"What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy?"

- Gandhi

I think they complement each other rather well and are very relevant to today

"Workers of the world, brake away from your chains and unite"
Karl Marx

"Rights prevent tyranny"
Alex Jones
