Not to long ago Stephane Dion won the Liberal Leadership Convention in Montreal. Now Mr. Dion has Dual Citizenship with France (believe he got it through his mother). Do you think Politicians who have a chance at running the country should give up their second citizenship?

governer-general(representative of the queen in commonwealth nations) Micheal Jean faced the same problem when she accepted the position of governer-general (she gained French citizenship when she married her husband.) she gave up her French citizenship.

I dont see why, except to appease the unappeasable ... I have dual citizenship does that make me any less canadian?

You foul man! You've no right to call yourself Canadian! Go back to Spain! You've already conquered and destroyed the new world... there's nothing left for your kind here.

:cheese:

Well, a domesticated spy then.

We've got lots here.

Of course they shouldn't have to give up their dual citizenship, that's the stupidest thing I've heard all day.

you choose to live in fear

???????

On topic: Not giving up dual citizenship would be almost the same as having a foreigner run the country. We don't recognize dual citizenship for any of our citizens, and if you're on the family census register, you're a citizen, no matter what.

:upstare: I find it laughable that your always on about how great your country is only to follow it with a long list of things your country doesnt allow

Because by not allowing them, my country is greater?

lol! superiority by suppressing freedoms that are the norm in other countries ...ya I can see how that makes sense

The US banned the communist party with the communist registration act, why not here?

lol you're not using the US as an example are you?

Well, it's a whole lot better than China..... or South Africa.... or all of Africa....

yeah.

china executes over 10,000 political prisoners a year ..africa has genocide, widespread aids, poverty, famine drought ...ya compared to those you're a freakin utopia ..but so is pretty much everyone else

If the people want to elect a dual-national, what's the problem?

If they pass the necessary vetting then I don't see why paranoid xenophobia should alter things.

This is nothing but xenophobia.

"You shouldn't be allowed to have an effect on our government because you have ideas that came from somewhere else!"

Retarded. And also analogous to racism and the women's suffrage movement.

You can't just "give up" your second citizenship under certain circumnstances. You may "renounce" to it in a symbolic act to express your allegiance to your country of residence, but as far as I know, you will always have double citizenship. For example, if you were born in Mexico and then move the US and become a citizen, Mexico will still consider you a Mexican citizen; or if you were born in the US to Mexican parents.
