Why is polygamy considered bad (I think its a crime actually)? We happily accept we can love multiple parents, siblings, childeren, cousins etc. Yet for some reason, loving more than one spouse is forwned upon. It seems just like the homosexual situation to me. Polygamous marriges, like homosexual ones, do no harm to society, and frankly, its not your buisness, regardless of what your religion is.
So why is polygamy hated so much? Anyone hav eany ideas? Or is it just hated because its different?

it's because of equality ..the women are usually seen as nothing more than prized cattle ..at least ethically ..legally it's not a criminal offense in most parts of the world ..the US has specific laws that prohibit it ..it's usually about subservience and conforming to religious tradition ..anyways this should be enough for the practice to looked at infavourably:

Tim Clutton-Brock and Kavita Isvaran at the University of Cambridge in England, compared about 20 monogamous and polygynous vertebrate species, found the more polygynous a species was, the more likely their males were to age faster and die earlier than females

:O

Yeah, but one could have multiple husbands as well.

ya but it's rarely women with multiple husbands because most of it is religious in nature ..I mean how many religions elevate women above men? ...none that I can think of

That's really flawed. They're different species; of course they're going to have different lifespans. That doesn't mean their polygamy or monogamy affects their lifespan one bit.

I don't have a problem with non-religious polygamy. I don't think I would ever take part in it, but if people want to be a part of that sort of thing then all the more power to them. If it causes any sort of damage, it hurts nobody but themselves.

I practice polygamy, it's great.

Not that my ladies know, of course.

have you seen some of the women in a polygamas relationship? :x

for starters; there's a reason why they cover their legs ...razors are either scarce in amish contry or there's something more sinister at work .. :O

Well, there's nothing ethically wrong about it any more than there is about normal relationships - which can be unequal or unkind or unsound as well.

There's nothing ethically wrong with it, until children become involved.

Marriage isn't about a man and a woman, it's about families.

There was some kind of Tibetan culture that did that. Still does actually in Southern parts of China.

Women work the fields, while the men sit in the village playing cards  But the women were the decision makers there.

While I truely could care less about whether or not someone is a poligamist, I find the whole ideal contradicting to the idea of a mutual symbiotic "relationship". Just like I find open relationships to be an oxymoron.

Man, you guys are boring.

Polygamous relationships? If you allow that, people will start marrying their horses, marrying concepts like infinity, or other absurdities.

Obviously polygamy is bad and evil and I cannot support such a thing! Ban polygamy, ban homogamy! Ban ban ban!!

I don't see any reason as to why polygamy shouldn't be legal. Just because the whole arrangement is ****ing stupid doesn't mean such people should be barred from making their own decisions.

"Most women benefit from polygyny, while most men benefit from monogamy"

Clearly not all of us are billionaires, so I think it would really hurt a lot of us guys if all the ladies went off with well to do men. Joking joking.

"Most suicide bombers are Muslim"

The article tries to make a point that polygyny is a cause of that. Dunno how true that is though.

I think a lot of women say they approve of their poligamist lifestyles simply because it means lots of money for them.

And for dudes, well, the dude just enjoys banging more than one chick.

The entire thing seems generally oxymoronic and defeats the purpose of a relationship.
No matter how dumb I find it, I really don't care what they do, its their choice I guess.
That's the way to do it. Even if you don't like it, there's no sense in banning it for that reason alone. Highfive for rationality? :D

I know of a lot of polygamous relationships that work successfully.

Well, at least I heard on a forum once that they were. At the time.

Yeah, but it's not as if the 'traditional' family always works out perfectly for kids either. That concept of the nuclear family is itself an abstraction, not necessarily a natural state, and there's no reason why a threesome, polygamous household or even an entire community can't raise a child perfectly well.

agreed, however there is no bond quite like the bond of biological parents ..my extended family can provide support both emotional and otherwise but they cant provide what biological parents can 24/7
