I just read this in my daily newspaper (it's a widely respected one in the country) so sorry if i don't post a source, having a hard time finding an English one. But i'm not bullshitting you.

Quick summary of article
The pope said in a recent bishops (word?) conference that "happy and fruitful times lay ahead" referring to the once again elected Berlusconi.

Let me remind you that Berlusconi is a rightists and in this mandate it has some members from the nationalistic party. Basically he's flirting with fascists.

Oh and it was also mentioned that the Pope is preparing an anti-abortion document which will be put forward for legislation. He also wants to have publicly financed private Catholic schools and Berlusconi agrees.

You thought the Catholic church would have learned a lesson since the "appeasing" Hitler and Mussolini stuff before WW2. This is just one more reason to stay away form Catholicism (or any religion for that matter). They don't even try to be subtle about it.

off topic: just this morning i heard on my local radio station a song which i think could be labeled Christian rock, i'm guessing because the melody was mostly a happy one with nice bells, organs and distorted guitar plus some dude repeating (the chorus) "Amen" over and over again with a gentle voice.

They did more than appease fascism. Fascism was basically the political wing of the vatican.

I think there is a a big difference between Berlusconi and Hitler, I doubt he's any more right wing than the US republican party.

Although Rome elected a fascist mayor, which is slightly worrying.

The catholic church and facist governments go hand in hand more then you'd think, their intolerant bigoted conservative ideals and opinions are pretty similar.

Meh, I trust Berlusconi more then any pope, let alone this one, and I think this one is basically the closest thing to Satan that can actually exist in reality.

Care to elaborate? Or is this yet another Atheist Circlejerk Of HL2.net?

the pope wants anti-abortion laws and he's gonna get them trough right wing politicians...pretty simple to understand, really

Berlusconi is pretty awful. I mean, he has a record of changing the law to make his own actions legal...hmm.

How is normal democratic procedure fascist? Everyone who is a citizen of the country has the right to submit a proposal either alone or through politicians. And if Italy elected such a parliament that allows right wing to dictate such laws, it's their. ****ing. Fault.

yes i agree it's their ****ing fault.
but the pope has its ways to bypass the tedious democratic procedure.

When Mussolini took power, he did so through a coalition of Italian parties including pro-catholics, and with the consent and support of the Pope. One of Mussolini's biggest goals was to re-establish the Catholic Church and the Vatican as the cultural head of Italy. The Pope also publicly supported some of Hitler's policies, and especially supported Franco during the Spanish Civil War.

During the 20's-40's, the Catholic Church saw facism as a way to combat communism, which, being atheistic, was a threat to their authority; especially in Spain and Italy.

Vatican participated in international politics actively, yes. Why is it suddenly horrible? Isn't the Appeasement and selling Austria and the Czech Republic over to Germany worse?

Second, you all conveniently ignore the fact that the Vatican was located in the dead center of fascist Italy. Kind of hard to be an opposition in that position.

crazy! Its already too religious in this country as it is! I remember when my mom spent a week in the hospital. Every morning a priest would walk into her room and read the bible. Shes not even Christian but she still had to do it because the others in the room wanted it. Im not talking about the cafeteria or anything, im talking about in the actual room where her bed is. And they had crucified jesus on the walls and shit. They even have a school just down the street where the nuns are the teachers, you are forced to pray in the morning. Its from first grade up to highschool level, its just sick.

And now this shit? Bah why not just bring in theocracy and get it overwith? Glad im moving in about a year

I didn't say this was bad. I was simply saying that the Vatican did actively support facism as a public policy during that era.

Fascism was very popular with a lot of people in the 1930's, before Mussolini sided with Hitler, Churchill thought he was the greatest statesman in Europe.

Nooo, Italy's a religious country? Get outta here! Next thing you'll be telling us organized crime is rampant as well.

Meh, I actually don't mind the current Pope that much.

I don't like his dark sunken eyes brimming over with contempt for all living things and his gruesome maw curled into a sinister smile that betrays his true feelings about how much he respects his fellow man.

Perfect face for a Pope TBH. The last one was a strange divergence from the norm in that he was actually a decent human being who gave the position he held some respect, even to non-catholics.

John Paul wasn't exactly Mr. Pope Perfect either.
