Hey all, I'm new to forums and everything, but ill get right to the point

Counter-strike (or any online game for that matter) is not working, everytime I try to join a server, it says "failed after 4 retries". I'm on a wireless network, but had no problem playing at my old house, it's just when I moved here, everything messed up. My friend said it might have something to do with a firewall, and that I should tweak my ports. I know that I have to type my IP address in the address bar on a browser, than login using a username and password, (one was 'admin' I think) but I dont remember that either. If anyone could help me, that'd be amazing. Thanks a million.

ok I assume you have a router. And I also assume that you, nor your parents, have changed the login and password for your router.

open internet explorer/Firefox and type your IP (usually if you're the main computer on the network it's 192.168.0.1 but sometimes it's 192.168.0.2 or .3 at the end). A login and password prompt should appear. Type "Admin" for the login and "password" for the password (it's a good idea to change this to something you and your family will remember after)

Then you must create a service for your game. There's a services tab usually on your router config. Counter-strike's port number (which you should enter for it to be opened later on) is 27015. So put that in, and open them as both TCP and UDP (safest this way to make sure it runs properly).
Then there should be a page called "Firewall Rules". Click this and add the Counter-strike Service for both Inbound and outbound traffic, and make sure it says "always allow". That should be it But don't blame me if your computer blows up :p...

dangit, it still doesn't work... it won't let me login. that's really weird. is there any way to find out or retrieve the password? oh and im not on a main computer, im on a branch of the wireless network, we dont have a main compy, just laptops.

thanks anyway

Damn, I really don't know how to retrieve the password. Could you ask who changed it? If not consult the manual, the default password might be different.

Restart the router. There should be a little pinhole in the front or back that says restart by it. Just shove a paperclip into that and hold it there for a few seconds. That'll reset all the router settings to default.

OR, it could be that dekstar was wrong. I have yet to see a router use "admin" and "password" for username and password, respectively. I almost always see it being "admin" and "admin" for user name and password. Either that, or "admin" for username, and you don't enter anything for password.

my router came as "admin" "password" as defualt
and port forwarding was under "Port Forwarding tab"
maybe the computer you are on is not allowed access to router control panel?

Yeah it does all depend on the respective router which you own. My Netgear (and all the netgear routers IIRC) have the admin/password combo, but others are different.

thanks everyone, you've been a huge help, ill let you know if it works :D

hmm, well. i've tried everything, even resetting it.

somethings really weird, i have vonage phone service, so i have this broadband router and a wireless router hooked up to eachother, idk if that has anything to do with it.

thanks anyway

WELL SPEAK OF THE EFFING DEVIL

sorry for double posting, but pickledgecko, im your bitch, your ip thing worked, im into the control panel.

ahh that's a relief.

you guys are the best :]

ok, hmm. im in, but what do i do now? dekstar, i dont see the port number thing you're referring to, here's a screenshot

and oh, those checkboxes that say "enabled", i just enabled them, before, they were all unchecked. Dunno why I did, just thought it would help something -.-.

The fields from left to right are as follows - Application Name, Start Port (to forward), End Port (to forward), Protocol (type to forward), IP Address (internal IP address to forward to).

Also, if you use a WEP key, it may screw with the wireless connectivity. It may be more secure, but it sometimes causes the connection to cut out. I know this because you have the EXACT same router I have :upstare:

EDIT: Your firmware version is also out of date, just thought I should mention that as well.

alright i got that, but what do i put in to let me play CS?

if anyone can explain this to me over AIM, my screenname is noynekttamxd

I got a similar problem, but how do I check my local ip-adres?

I helped him solve the problem, it turned out he was playing behind double routers. I told him to move the wireless router to first in the network, now it works

The Brick: Go to control panel -> network connections -> <connection name>
If you mean your external IP address, you can check it several ways (ie - http://whatismyip.com/).

Yeah I got so far. It sais ip-adress 10.0.0.14, but if i type that in the adressbar, it sais connection refused :s

EDIT: My problem is that emule has a 'low-id', it whines about my port 4662 being not reachable.

HAHA! I was just going to mention the ip thing. My router's also 192.168.1.1.

As for the ports, no, that's not how it works. You would enter the name of the app in application (something informative, like CS:S Steam) then you'd enter the two ports in the range. Go to www.portforward.com to find out the range of the ports you need to open. It would be under Half Life 2 Steam I believe.

I got it guys, thanks everyone for your help, i've learned a few things that will def. come in handy in the future :D

That 10. address is the IP address of your PC, that's an IP address being handed out from your router. In order to access your router you'll have to enter the default gateway address into the browser which is the routers IP address, in your case it may be something like 10.0.0.1 but you can check by clicking your windows start button > Run > Type in cmd > Command prompt will open > Type in ipconfig /all > this will display all IP address information including the default gateway

From here do port mapping or port forwarding for whatever ports you need, like in your case for emule you'd forward port 4662 to your computers IP address 10.0.0.14

Any more questions just ask :p

Doesn't work...:(
My dad said it isn't possible due to a dynamic ip adress from a dhcp thing (or something :/). He said the dhcp gives my computer a new ip adress everytime I reboot my computer, which directs to the static ip adress of my internetprovider. Therefor being impossible to config my router. :/

Well, then setup a static IP that doesn't change. Portforward.com's got you there. Just make sure to use the one that's got all your cs:s ports open.

If you want you can just statically assign one of those 10. addresses to your PC, it doesn't matter if DHCP is on which will just assign an internal dynamic address to anything that's plugged into the router. Are you sure you have a router or do you just have a modem? If you just have a modem then you won't be able to log into it because it's just a modem...although some newer modems do allow you to log into them but theat's mainly for authentication purposes.

Gah, it's BAAACK

i can't play cs a-frickin'-gain

i think it has something to do with my ports

in the server admin screen, when it says "Port - from "0" to "0" what do i put in those boxes to enable the ports?

thannnkkss again

-.-

For client I believe it's 27005, not 100% sure (can't check at the moment), but I'm pretty sure. :)

But just to be sure, you didn't touch your router since I last helped you, did you? :p

If it comes down to it, I'd be willing to help you out using VNC or something like it (of course, it's up to you). If you'd prefer, however, I can try to help you over AIM, again.

You are a very good necromancer.

And, for the second time in one day, i'll say this again.

Good things come to those who read the entire thread.
