Portal crashes after first portal

I bought the Orange Box yesterday through Steam and have downloaded Half-Life 2 and Portal (currently downloading the rest). In Half-Life 2 I can get in with no launch options. In Portal for launch options, I currently have:
Code:
-window -dxlevel 81 -steam +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1 +mat_bumpmap 0 +mat_picmip 2
and get this error:
Code:
Portal: hl2.exe
The instruction at "0x10e513f2" referenced memory at "0x2cc19554". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
but only when I go through the first portal to get out of that room (relaxation chamber-???)

I formatted my computer about a week ago and could not get into Garry's Mod without it crashing (before I formatted I had no probelms), so I used these:
Code:
-steam +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1
Tried these with portal, but it still crashed.
When I formatted I also updated my graphics driver and that seems to have stuffed up the display as well.

Any help into fixing this problem is greatly appreciated.

Team Fortress crashes when it starts to create game sound files.

It's the integrated graphics that's hurting your performance. Tried running in dxlevel 80?

I know it's the graphics because it has caused me problems in the past. Running it with -dxlevel 80 causes exactly the same problem.

i doubt it even supports direct x 8. even though it says 9, that just means you have 9 installed.

I've got one of those Intel graphics cards. it's only DirectX 8 and Portal also refuses to go beyond the first portal.

I went to yougamers.com to compare my system with the minimum requirements and it said that my processor is significantly more powerful in raw performance and that my display card has all the required features yet it still crashes after i walk through the first portal.

i have no clue what you're talking about. i didn't even know about this site until i googled the portal crashing problem.

you just came into this thread assuming we knew what you were trying to ask.

I'm just saying that i found a website that could compare my system with the requirements for any pc game and it told me that my system has all the necessary requirements to play portal but it still crashes after i go through the first portal.

The site lied to you. Your PC sucks too much. Either that, or the drivers that would magically make your PC rise JUST above the minimum level of suck are setup wrong/wrong versions.

I have the exact same problem, and I know now that it is definitely because the computer/graphic card is not powerful enough to support the game.
