Portal - DirectX Error?

Can anyone help?
When I run portal, it gets through everything, gets to the loading screen, then closes out saying "Needs a minimum of DirectX 8.0 or higher to run properly."

Even though I have:

DirectX 8.0
DirectX 8.1
DirectX 10.0

you need a direct x 8 supported card in order to play. even though you have the software direct x, it wont matter without the hardware that supports it.

What would be supported? I have a NVIDIA GeForce (Don't remember rest) graphics card, but I can usually play anything.

and I didn't think I would need 9, since the update of it went straight to 10 when i tried to download 9 anyway.

if you have a geforce 3 ti at least then you are supported for dx8 i believe.

sorry that only supports up to dx7.

you will need to find a new AGP card in order for you to play the new source games

1 GB RAM,
NVIDIA GeForce GC (One I said before)

That card is basically the only reason you cannot play, upgrade.

Hehe. You can't download a better graphics card. I would suggest just saving up and buy yourself a whole new rig. Based on your current system specs it is not really worth it to upgrade your graphics card.

I Have the same problem...but i hav a Geforce4 MX 440. it says on the infomation tht it is DirectX 9.0 or higher. HELP!( i wanna play portal!!)
