Porting news from a forum?

Ok, lets say you have a phpBB or vbulletin. In that, there is a forum that only staff can use. When the staff member makes a new thread, the content of the threads first post (author, time+date and text) is but on to the home page of the site.

Very much like how halflife2.net works...

How is this done?

Or is there a 'How To' tutorial?

It's done by coding what is often called a "news script" in PHP. So if you google on that + name of the forum software you should find something useful.

I have no names of good ones, because I tend to write my own. If you know PHP you should be able to do that too, but then you probably wouldn't have asked this.
