It just came to me; I remember I read something some time ago about City 17 not being on earth at all. And that you, Gordon are helping the G-Man invade and colonize other planets.. Your thoughts?

The whole game was to take place on earth, and I doubt City 17 is in Norway or Denmark.

if there are zen levels they can be 100 times better with the source engine now that there is displacement mapping, which means smooth bumpy walls, ceilings, floors, as well as animated bumps, you could actually make it look organic and move

please to god no more Xen levels, i nearly died of confusion frustration and something else when i played those. I really really dont like Xen.
even if i could be made better with the stuff i'll still resent doing it.

It was confirmed by someone (Valve People) that there will be no Xen and that all of Half-Life 2 will take place on Earth.

The area you're describing is basically the Nordic Atlantic coastline. To me the outdoor screens and movies looked more Baltic, or further east.

I read somewhere, not entirely sure where, though i think one of those first PC Gamer articles that city 17 was an eastern european city, it would fit since the screens do kinda look like cities in that region.

Definetly on earth though, thank god no Xen man i hated that place. :hmph:

Yeah, City-17 definitely looks more like a former Soviet satellite state, more eastern, you know.

And I thought Valve said that we would be briefly visiting Xen in
Half-Life 2, but maybe i'm wrong.

There will be Xen CHARACTERS, but it has been confirmed that we / Gordon will not be traveling back to that hellhole... err, Xen I mean.

According to Gabe and Doug @ VALVe, they said that they were trying to go for a "European"-style look with City-17. I think they did pretty damn well from what I've seen.

The jumping puzzles, which were trivial to the plot development. They were simply tedious, and annoying.

Well, duh! Bullsquids, Houndeyes, Headcrabs, Vortigaunts, etc. And XEN isn't the big piece of the pie, it's only a ''border world.''
Then there are the new ''XEN'' creatures: Ant Lion, Ant Lion Guard, Hydra, etc.

Anything with yellow-green blood is probably from Xen.

I've said this before, I actually liked Xen. Yeah, I'm weird.

Also, in the original PC Gamer article, the VALVe dudes said that there will be "offworld locations". That doesn't necessarily mean Xen. I reckon we'll see the Combine homeworld, if they're aliens/alien hybrids, and we'll see Xen again in HL3.

There will be no Xen in HL2 and City 17 has been described as a fully fictional city based around areas of Eastern Europe. It has hints of the UK in it as well IMO.

i personally liked Xen for the uber creepy atmosphere. I never really minded the jumpng puzzles really.

It was the strange tie-dye sky that always impressed me, it gave the feeling that you were VERY far from home nd all the ambient noises. Man i loved those

Someone should mod in some xen missions into the game

Speaking of Xen... I remember from somewhere that one of the things Gabe wishes he could've done with HL1 was more Xen....*shudder* I didn't like Xen much...correction...at all..

well ive been saying, xen in its 'true' form would be very curvy, bumpy, alive, and dynamic. hl engine couldn't pull this off no matter how much they would work on it. but with hl2 and displacement maps(moving ones too), i believe xen could be portrayed how it was originally envisioned.

Yea I heard the same thing too, it was a theory that PC Gamer came up with in one of its issues and it was later disgarded false when Valve said it was all set on Earth...

But then again in MGS2 everyone assumed playing Snake even in the trailers, we didnt see any white haired guy running about til the reviews came out....

yeah, some of the buildings look like their in Leeds. and I coulda sworn one night after a lot of drinking I saw a strider walk out of Lloyds, or maybe it was just a very tall lass?

Ooh thanks for your humble 2 cents..
I'm just trying to prevent people from flaming me. It sounded pretty plausible to me that Gordon at first fights the invading force (Xen or whatever) and then switches sides because he realizes that the humans themselves are the invading agressor (He's not defending earth but invading planet 17 or whatever). Which IMHO is a ver nice plot twist. And for your information it's not my personal theory which I read in the snotrag of my mother.. I read it in some preview. Speculation, but it sounded pretty plausible (personal opinon).

Isn't there something along those lines in another game? Can't remember which one offhand though
