I had the studder bug earlier today, I have some tips to get rid of it. This is using a Radeon 9800 pro with catalyst 5.2 drivers. Credit goes to to Opo for the commands in step 7 and LordDrake for the 8th step.

1) Clear any programs you don't use from your computer (I deleted 25 gigs today)

2) Defrag your hard drive (go to my computer, right click your HD icon, properties, tools, defragment, this will take a few hours)

2.5) Check hard drive for errors (optional may take a few hours, the command is right below the defrag command)

3) Change speed settings to higher in BIOS

4) Go to "Run" the start menu and type "msconfig"

5) Turn off any programs on start up that are unneccesary.

6) Restart just in case.

6) Go into c/program files/steam/youremail/steamapps/halflife2/hl2/cfg folder and open up the "config" file with notepad.

7) Underneath the unbindall command, make a space and put these in (copy and paste from this message)

mp_decals "4096"
r_decal_cullsize "0"
r_lod "-5"
r_propsmaxdist "5000"
cl_ragdoll_collide "1"
jpeg_quality "100"
r_rainradius "2500"
r_rainsplashpercentage "100"
cl_c4dynamiclight "1"
sv_autosave "0"

Save it, mark it as read only. This will keep the game from overwriting it. sv_autosave "0" is the main one, the rest are purely cosmetic.

8) Go to

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\YOURACCOUNTNAME\half-life 2\hl2\SAVE

Mark these 4 files as read only (right click them---properties----mark as read only)

autosave.sav
autosave.tga
autosave01.sav
autosave01.tga

This got rid of my studder bug on a 9800 pro with the latest catalyst drivers and also brought my loading times from the 2.5-4.5 minute range to the 10-30 second range. Hope this helps. BTW what video card do you guys have?

I posted this at the steampowered forums, thought I'd share it over with halflife2.net.

p4e 2.8
asus p4p800e deluxe
1024 pc3200 dual channel
radeon 9800 pro atlantis (256bit) 128mb

it would be nice if you could explain some of the commands u put in

oh, how do you check which catalyst version you have. im normally up do date

Use the catalyst control center to find your drivers. BTW what do you mean by explain commands? I just edited the post to make them a bit more clear

hmmm, not too sure about the other commands, what exactly do they do?

if u leave them out, all ur doing is removing the auto save game feature which is supposed to help alot...do the other commands speed it up too?

The other commands are just to increase the graphical quality of the game - not to stop stuttering....

e.g. cl_ragdoll_collide prevents ragdolls going through eachother.

cl_c4dynamiclight makes the C4 bomb in CS:S dynamic

what he said

So...has anyone completed this and is your game working correctly yet?

I HIGHLY don't reccomend using the control center, as it uses up massive amounts of RAM and increases your windows XP loading time. It also takes much longer to load compared to the classic tabs. Use the tabs.

Just found out something, the RAM speed (in BIOS) doesn't have to be faster, it has to be more stable. Go into BIOS and make the ram speed more stable, hope this clears up any confusion.

Good news, this fix helped out some people over at the steam forums. Any results yet guys for the fix I posted?

Could you please explain to me, clearly and thoroughly, how to do just that?
