Once again we require the community's thoughts on this subject. We've had post counts on again for a long while now, but it seems that a number of you are starting to think against their use again.

So, do you think post counts should be enabled or disabled?

I think they should be disabled for public viewing, but I'm occassionally struck by curiosity as to what my own post count happens to be at any given time.

I know how to, but if I told you, ill have to kill you :dozey:

I really havn't seen them being abused much, thats not to say that there hasn't been any but to me the small amount of abuse doesn't warrant completely removing them, they have no real use other than to satisfy peoples curiosity but it is still a nice feature to have. Plus removing them will just cause arguments in the future about having them put back in again.

For now keep them, remove them only if it becomes worse. Thats my opinion.

I say keep them. Legitimate post counts are directly related to community involvement. If they become a problem for specific users then those users should be dealt with on a case by case basis. Forum features such as the post count (That Pendragon has confirmed to be of a certain curiosity to users and staff alike) should not be removed to cut out a small problem causing few.

Looks to me like indirect revenge by Magnetichead. He lost his posts, so he instigates the question of the loss of everyone elses.

Post counts play a critical role in how you view someone. On a site as big as this it's hard to keep track of all the people you see posts of.

Will you take a person with 500 posts opinion more seriously than one with 1 post?
(There are exceptions - assholes who talk too much)

Also, it lets you know how much someone has contributed.
(once again, there are exceptions - assholes who talk too much)

That is exactly why I think looking at people's join dates instead of post counts is so much more important.

Keep them on. Spam and post counts are not directly related+ I like to know who's a noob or not :p

Personally I think they should stay on, and spammers/abusers get dealt with individually.

I voted off.

Simply because I think it'll end with spammers.

I could care less about post count, we have the "species" (headcrab etc) and Join date for distinction if anything.
voted off as well.

I dont care. I voted off.

Im too lazy to tilt my head to look at the postcounter anyways.

I say leave it on. Join dates do not accurately portray the correct amount of knowledge/community participation for any one member.

but in combination with the status/species thingy it does.

like Headrcab, combine, hydra etc.

Yeah, the whole status thing complements the join date already.

Says the hydras... :p

Look at me... I'm a wussy little manhack! :O

I voted enabled but I dont really care. The join date in combination with the status pretty much puts you at how much knowledge you have. Plus you remember the frequent posters from seeing there posts all the time and usually if there is a statement at question a member can provide proof anyway and so it puts to rest issues. So i guess maybe I should have voted for them off then, oh well, I dont care. I dont see much of a problem with spamming to get post counts.

I don't really care, but I voted for enabled. Would be cool though if you somehow could view your own postcount, if you decide to turn them off. Like say somewhere in the use CP.

I'm neutral on this whole thing, as there are pros and cons to both. But seeing as I'm that type of person who takes a while to accept "change" I voted for them to be enabled.

I voted to disable the post count...I really dont need to be reminded that I've posted 850 posts in a little over a month ....i'm a loser :)

Off Please!

So says Magnetichead, who was made a post count reset example.. :)

I voted on, because really, it only takes a few extra clicks if they're off to check your actual post count

The titles (Headcrab, Bullsquid, Icthyosaur, etc) are fun, but I could take or leave the post counts.

Doesn't matter. I would turn it off.

It's a dead even vote right now. :O

Could StarMonkey code a hack where it's user defined whether or not they're shown? It's a VERY split vote.

For me it dosent matter i post on 16 other forums beside of this, some with post count on and some with post count off.
And i dont judge ppl by their post count, but i judge them by what they wright and how they reply, thats whats important to me.
On big forum like this one you get to know some ppl better then others, and then the post count dosent matter.
So what did i say, dosent matter if its on or off

i agree with ur sentiments.
i don't really care about post counts but once in a while it is nice to glance over.

overall this post count issue hasn't been a big deal since April when the site came back online (thank god.. before that post count was such a spam issue) and because of that...spamming/post counts should be dealt with on user by user basis.

word of advice Magnetichead.. had u posted in a thread (without it being spam) and then after realized u reached ur whatever 1500 posts etc.. nobody would have had problems had u gone back and edited ur post with a celebritory "yay" or "woot" but when u start making threads over it.. it becomes stupid and annoying.

Unfortunately the only people who would turn it off are the ones this isn't aimed at.
