ok i plan mt make my parents hack up 500$ for a new Nvidia 6800 ultra (currently have a fx 5200) where can i find out what power supply i have thx in advance

Get a cleaver, hack into the PSU case, put a drill in there and drill around randomly, put your fingers in and turn on your PC.

Or just read the numbers on the PSU case

You forgot to tell him to lick the PSU too.

But seriously, it will say it on the PSU.

480W power supply minimum. Geesh, my parents Celeron 566 runs fine on a 100W power supply.

Apparently quite a few review sites have been running on 420W PSUs with no problems - just make sure it's a high quality (heavy) and made by a manufacturer like ThermalTake, Antec, Emermax etc. with highs amps on the 12 and 5 volt rail.

To find what power supply you have, there should be a label on the power supply - you might have to unscrew it and turn it around if the label isn't visible.

I would stick with 480W. That way if you decide to upgrade something 6 months down the line, you don't have to worry about power.

i see a button or switch witch ive allways seen but it says 115v... i think its just a breaker or somethin..

ok i opened my case when no one was lookin and i shoved my head in it... all i saw under or on the side if you took it out... was htis big pruduct sticker... i think it was tripodpro or somethin i forgot... but it just had a big sticker with boxes of numbers warrenty void ect... but i did find some whierd book in the bottom of the computer... thats whierd.. i dont recall ppl shoveing thare candle books in a computer case.. ok it sayed like 230 or somethin 50/60 hrtz me have no idea... any way i can check without going back into my case... aka sys infomation or somethin?

No, you can't check without going back into your case. I've never seen a PSU without a wattage rating on it somewhere, however misleading it may be.

230/115 v 50/60 Hz have nothing to do with wattage, but instead relate to the PSU's AC power interface. Don't worry about it and don't change it.

yeah well i need to know what my power supply is so i know if i need to put in a 550 for NV40U

I really doubt that you have a 480W PSU, especially if you bought a pre-built computer from Dell, HP, Compaq, etc. Most of those beige boxes almost always have a PSU under 300W. Anyways, if you are going to spend $500 on a graphics card, what is another $70 on a power supply?
