my power supply says "p4 ready" does this mean i have to get one that says "AMD X ready" if im going to switch over to amd?

Nope, AMD just needs the 20 plug connector to go to the motherboard. P4 I think needs an additional 4 plug connector to go along with the 20 plug connector.

Correct.
Although I have seen a few Athlon XP boards that do infact use that 4 pin plug.

Yeah I put together a micro-ATX AMD AthlonXP machine for a mate of mine that used the 4-pin connector too... I think most if not all ATX PSU's sold these days have support for all ATX mainboards though.
