im looking for a power supply thats 400 watts or more, reliable, and $35 bucks or less is that somthing thats possible to find cuz im getting a antec plusview 1000 and i want somthing that will run my athlon 64 3500+ 90nm, 60gb hardrive, dvd/cd rom, msi neo 2 platinum w/1gb of ram, and radeon 9700. your finds are appriciated.

alright thanks for all the help. I found some chieftec cases that are alot cheeper than the antec cases and look exactly the same does anyone know if they are any good?

Allied have actually not been the best PSU's out there. Link
I've seen a number of PSU's gone bad from this brand and under the Deer brand (same brand).

Thermaltake seems to have the best PSUs for the price. Chieftec cases are great, by the way. Without taking a look, it's probably the same design that everyone copies, including Antec.

do you guys know if ultra is any good? because there is some ultra on tigerdirect that come with the chieftec cases.are there any chieftec midtowers w/window for under 100bucks with a 400watt or more powersupply?

im not sure if firewire and usb come with the motherboards, cases or power supplies which do they come with?

Hmm maybe they're not so great nowadays. I thought it was strange that it that Allied one I linked only had 15A+12v. Well for a little more than $35 I think there's a 400w Thermaltake, can't go wrong there. *Edit* Yep, here it is.

Only $5 more than what you wanted to spend and it definitely won't let you down.

I'm not really sure although I don't think Ultra is a very popular brand, I think they make some video cards but don't here much about them... I wouldn't get one. Besides, they're $10 more than the Thermaltake I linked for you, and trust me that Thermaltake is way better, they make the best power supplies along with Antec get the Thermaltake.

Thermaltake has been around for awhile now and generally every model they make is great, as are Antec, Enermax and Fortron power supplies.

Ultra just sorta came onto the scene as I never heard of them until their X-Connect PSU (which is very good! IMO).

Yeah the X-Connect looked awesome to me, plenty of cables, 500 watt, but I just got the newest Maximum PC in and they did a torture test on psu's and the X-Connect did horrible so now I'm not sure about it. The Antec 480w Neopower $150 was the best even beat the PC Power and Cooling 510.

so you guys wouldn't recomend the x-connect, because i can get a x-connect for 109w/chieftec case for $109.00?

i have NEVER seen a bad review for the x-connect
and ive read 10+ reviews on it. I HIGHLY recommend it if you can get it.

If you guys want a 480-watt high-quality PSU for under $100, I posted a thread on one earlier.

here it is

it's $73 including shipping, I ordered one, came today. shipped in about 60 hours, very quick. Weighs a ton, cant wait to try it out (newegg deliver manyana, yipee!).

If you are overclocking, running a very high power CPU and/or GFX card, big daddies like this are good mojo. Obviously, this is JUST the PSU, but some comparable models run for over $100

hehe
Tommy doesn't have the best of luck with Tagan...or Intel.

:O

Don't tell me that now! :hmph:

I saw it in the stress test and thought "those guys wouldn't use it if it weren't good."

oh well. :o

I'm not saying don't get the X-Connect, I loved it when I saw it and a lot of people have said good things about it, all I said was Maximum PC didn't like it, but I wouldn't listen to that because nobody else thinks it's bad. Go for it.

Sorry to bring this thread back up, but im getting ready to order my case and i was wondering what is imporntant to look for as far as cooling, 2 80mm or 1 120mm in the back, etc...? thanks.

Ya I didnt find that article so good. I have on very major concern with the article though. I have the Vantec stealth 520 and I have not had a single problem with it. And look at my rig, I have two hard drives, two optical drives a geforce 6800 ultra, 1 gig of ram, 7 case fans, an audigy 2 zs, floppy disk drive and a vantec spectrum fan card. Both my cpu and videocard are overclocked. I have not had a single problem with the power supply. Its funny because they claim to run 3dmark03 and have their system crash within minutes. All I can say is bull shit. I can run 3dmark03 and 05 and not have a single crash even on an overclocked system. My system temps are 23'c and my cpu sometimes goes up to 63. But with all that heat from the cpu partially exhausting to the power supply I still have not had a single problem. Oh and they claim that their vantec stealth reapetadly tripped circuit breakers. Well mine had never tripped a circuit breaker in a 15 year old house in which my dad wired himself. I would like maximum pc to review this power supply again because of all the reviews I have seen on the internet no one has had any problems with it. Maximum pc is the first. I will be writting them about this.

http://www.vr-zone.com/reviews/PSU/Vantec/VAN-520A/ (I even have the same case as the reviewer and both of us had no problems)

Hell even pcstats.com uses the vantec stealth 520 in some of their review systems. And as shown by the "we take the back article" in the same issue of maximum pc they have been wrong befor. So lets hope they correct this mistake. It might have just been a disfunctional powersupply for that one review but I think because that is one of the first problems I have heard with that powersupply it deserves to be re-reviewed. This is by far one of the best powersupplies I have ever had the honour of owning and it is not getting the credit it deserves.

Do you think that a 400w psu would be able to power this setup?:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 90nm
1gb of pc3200
60gb hd
1 optical drive
neo 2 platinum
3 fans
cause i was wondering if this could power my new setup.
Thermaltake Dream Tower
Also does this thing have ok cooling or is there a better alternative for around the same price that looks good also?

If not overclocked, I would say yes.
Unless you have one of the super-high drain top-of-the-line vid cards (you didn't mention), they can draw a lot of power.

I dunno, really. I think that case is kind of ugly, so we obviously have different standards.

The big gain of 120mm fans, btw, is noise level. A case with one 120mm fan will be decently quiet. That's what my aim has been... A push/pull arangement with two fans is usually better, or so I hear. 2x120mm ow noise fans can cool nicely and be quieter than 80mm ones.
I bought an Antec P-160 (Available with or without window for ~$110, sans power supply), that comes equipped with a single rear-mounted 120mm fan. I haven't built my system into it yet... with some luck I'll be able to tell you about it tomorrow. :P

alright well thanks for your info. my vid card is in my sig, so i dunno if it eats alot of power or not...

Hey but how much noise in db is quit, I mean is 27 db quit and 32.

Does anyone know where the antec p-160 is cheapest at becuase that was the second one i was looking into getting but it was more expensive being that you have to buy the case and the power supply seperate, if anyone finds a good deal your help would be great.:)

Oh and can anypne find reviews of this one, it looks to be better then tagen 380 but cheaper, and can it be used with AMD's cause there is says it compliant with P4, but doesn't say anything about AMD, more specificly with a VIA KT400 mobo.

Does anyone have the thermaltake shark, if so is the cooling any good, or anything else that woud be good to know?

im pretty sure the shark is a case designed for water cooling.. dont quote me on that though

alright yea it yea well its kinda an expensive case anyway, but how about the Antec p-160 w/window or the thermaltake tsunami dream w/window which one would be the better for air circulation, and maybe quality (sturdyness if thats a word).
