I just bought a new Rig upgrade (having to butcher most of the old rig i had)

Straight to the point-I want to know how to power my graphics card, whether i need a new power supply or can simply get an adapter to fit onto the graphics card socket. Im really frustrated that i can't use my system and i've turned to you for help.

The story -

I bought most the upgrade from overclock.co.uk and had a few problems with delivery which frustrated me, then i assembled my rig and powered it up.. monitor would not respong. found out that the Graphics card needs it's own powerinput

System Requirements

... Connection to the system power supply is required. The power supply should have a specialized 12v graphics card power connector

Now i have to use but my dad's pc, of which uses Windows 98 and has some sort of annoying problem that it boots up in very poor color mode, and my power house dont work. I really need a computer and want to know the remedy for my problem.... ahhhh

thanks in advance, if u you need anymore information i would be glad to reply.

It will use a normal molex connector.
Wasn't there one already attached to your graphics card with a a male and female sticking out?

Maybe your PSU isn't powerful enough, what is the Watts on it?

my power supply is 350 or 360 watts. the only port that is on the graphics card is a 4 pin, slightly bigger (and simlar looking) to system fan sockets on motherboards. My friend has informed me that his 9800pro uses the standard molex connection (for example : the same power connection for cd drives/hard drives) etc) but mine is not the same.

what amperage is on the 12+ rail thats more important than wattage

quoted on the side of the psu

wattage 350w
+12v1 = 10A
+12v2 = 15A

i just got my x800GTO2, they included an adapter cable that attaches to your HDD molex and then splits into one for your HDD and one for your GFX. it does sound a little different than yours though as mine has a 6pin socket on the back of the card, but from looking at this picture:

http://www.hwupgrade.it/immagini/x800gto.jpg

you can see the same 6 pin attachment solderings in the top right hand corner:)

took it to a computer store, he said that it doesnt have the true pci express power socket, and that the socket i have on there is for a fan. he said that if i bought i better qulaity pus (true 350w) that it should work but if it dont he will issue me a refund. why would there be a second socket for a fan? if he is right then my card is missing a power adapter? bloody hell this is so annoying please help :(

You have an older-generation PSU; get a new one for 60bucks or so and you're laughing. You'll have to do it sometime, so there's no point in taking back the card :)

Right, according to a user on the sapphire forums, the x800gto (unlike the gto2) does not need an additional power source. so this leaves the situation with one of two possible outcomes.

  • The "specialized psu" specification means a psu with high ratings (eg. higher amplitude/wattage from gerneric psu's of today) or...
  • The Graphics card is infact faulty and will not send any sort of output signal to the montior (which is why the monitor remains on standby despite in checking a good connection between the graphics card and the monitor)
Now i have built several rigs, and i mostly doubt i inflicted any staic related damage to the card, leading to my idea that it is a power consumption problem with my system. so regardless whether this is the problem or not I'm going to upgrade my PSU for futureproofing reasons as well.

What are the chances that i have received a faulty card from my supplier? And what are the chances that the fact that my card being faulty is actually the problem to my situation?

Yet again i would like to thank anyone in advance who can shed light on this. ATM i am all work and no play, which is very stressful... leaves me twitching in the corner of my room rocking back and forth until its time for my next shift :) Any information at all will be helpful :)

Your power supply is pretty good, 25a total on the 12v rail is exceptional for a 350w psu(you colud power a 7800gt with that).Either you are missing an apapter for the power supply, or you have a faulty card(imho).

Firstly I would contact your supplier to find out if an adapter should have been included, and take your problem straight to sapphire and see what they have to say.

Edit: Just had a look at the sapphire page, it had this to say , "Connection to the system power supply is required.
The power supply should have a specialized 12V
graphics card power connector"
Oh well, you could always send it back, the 7800gt is only 199 + vat from overclockers.co.uk.
And the bfg version uses a pair of standard molex connectors.
Not much more than your current card and a new psu together.
