Preloading HL2? What about the dial-up users?

Hi I just ordered HL2. Do I have to do preloading in order to be able to play the game?? I am on dial-up and it will take eternity or better never to download all the game assets...

Can I have some feedback regards this please TNX

if you have bought it with Steam, you will HAVE to download it with your 56k modem

you should have bought the retail version if so.

AFAIK the retail version is just the downloaded Steam. It just needs register a steam account and register your CD-Key and you'll be able to play with it.

Oops. I guess you need to contact a friend with the Half-Life 2 preloads and a dvd-burner. If you get a hold of the .gcf files, you're saved, otherwise you have a very long preload ahead of you.

Yeah, that's a bummer. You "could" contact VALVe and ask if they could cancel it and refund if you don't want to download it all.

Yeah, try contacting VALVe, they're pretty understanding people. Then again, not wishing to flame here, what you did was pretty stupid - research before you go ahead and buy stuff on a whim (besides you had almost 3 weeks to go still)

Anyways, I've had a change of mind: I'd say go with getting the GCFs on a DVD from a friend. That way you can get DOD:S quickly as well (it doesn't come in the retail versions)

I am on a wireless DLS and it's been on a steady download for a full 24 hours, and it is ONLY at 65%!!! I must not be getting good put-thru on this wireless carp.

right click the steam icon in the systray, and click 'monitor' - you can see what it's doing

Not sure why they removed the monitor button from the main menu though.

You can get skins which put the monitor button back (I'm using a rather lovely HL2 one now). Do a search for skins in this forum, you'll be sure to find some excellent links/files

Also, I worry about the idea of getting good put-thru on your wireless carp, jakdin. Poor fishy, it never deserved it

You can preload if you want instead of installing it from the CD's/DVD then just use the serial. Keep the originals safe somewhere then just incase.
