Stolen from the SA forums.

First, listen to this sound:
http://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/~mattd/sine-wave-speech/sws_d1.wav

Then, listen to this sound:
http://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/~mattd/sine-wave-speech/clear_d1.wav

The first one will sound like weird whistles and stuff and the second is speech. But now listen to the first one again.

It's known as sine-wave speech and a phenomenon explained here:
http://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/~mattd/sine-wave-speech/

And what's cooler is that you can't unlearn hearing speech in the first one.

Eh, none of these are getting me anymore. I could make out a few words before I listened to them in clear speech, and I fully heard the last one before checking (but it might have been more obvious than the others).

Bricks were shat.
And Bad Hat, it says on the site that you eventually tune into it so it's easier to learn them. But I don't know if the last one is easy or not.

i could already tell what the first one said before i listened to the second one

I could also hear it pretty well in the first one.

That was pretty cool. Probably not brick-shittingly cool though.

Not brick shit worthy, sorry. I could make it out in the first one. I played it once, could tell it was someone talking, but my volume was down too much, so I played it again and easily understood.

FUCK YOU! :frown:

The point isn't that you can hear what is being said (and I believe if you listen to it not knowing it's supposed to be speech that you won't recognize it as such) but when you listen to the second one, the first one is MUCH clearer, regardless if you already heard it. It's just really cool how your brain picks up the pattern.

Secondly, you're supposed to get better at these once you hear more of them, you learn your brain (or yourself, because you are your brain, but that's a whole other discussion) to recognize these patterns of sound and interpret them as speech.

Ring modulation applied to voice is much cooler.

It's not working for me.
Nothing is playing.

I didnt recognize the first sound at least :)

Very cool illusion.
