Three men armed to the teeth walk by, unaware of your presence, you watch as one splits away from the group to inspect a dumpster. With no-one behind him now is your chance, now is your time to strike.
This is The Hidden: Source of course, a very tense game of cat and mouse as one player is armed with a knife and the ability to pounce, cling onto walls, turn invisible and even pin corpses to ceilings and Interlopers.net has been given the privilege of being the first site to take an in-depth hands on test of what the creators of the Hidden have in store for the next release.
Probably the first thing to notice about the new beta is the content; New textures, new models and even some new sounds gives Beta 2 of The Hidden: Source a much more unique feel to it, instead of the stock content chock beta 1, but looking past the visuals and into the mechanics you will see that there have been some new features implemented. As mentioned before, in Hidden Beta 2 the player who is Subject 617 (A.K.A The Hidden) can cling onto walls briefly, not only does this mean that the maps are more accessible to the 617 player, but it also means that the I.R.I.S team have to be extremely aware, because instead of only having to worry about 617 attacking from the ground like in the previous versions with the wall clinging implemented it now means that 617 can bounce from wall-to-ceiling-to-wall, meaning that I.R.I.S players will have to not only watch both their backs and fronts, but also their heads.
Along with the ability to cling to walls 617 can now pick up corpses and objects, this introduces a whole load of new strategies. 617 players can throw objects to try and distract I.R.I.S team, they can use corpses as bullet shields and even string them up to walls to keep as a later "feast" in which 617 can gain health from the bodies of the deceased.
As for I.R.I.S team? Well, they have had some additions as well. In Beta 2 players get to choose from 9 different player models, although performance wise there is no difference between them, they are each unique so no player will look the same in a round. Also a new weapon has been introduced, the FN P-9 pistol which goes with the shotgun load out. The P-9 has a smaller ammo capacity than the 5-7 in the previous version, but it now has a tad more stopping power.
Another welcome addition to many players is that the P-90 SMG has a kickback, meaning that players won't just be able to spray and pray unless they want to end up facing the ceiling. Also both the 617 and the I.R.I.S team have different HUDs, both displaying the vitals to the player, 617's HUD design is said to be a reflection on his state of mind, and the I.R.I.S HUD is simplistic and sleek to show that these men are from a professional organization.
Map wise there are plenty of new additions, including two very impressive tutorial maps. The tutorial maps in question are made to help the player get used to the changes from beta 1 to beta 2 and also give the mod a story background explaining the Escape of 617 and how it got out into the world. Along with the two new tutorial maps, there have also been some additions to the stock list.
These include a rustic Manor, with lots of nooks and crannies for the 617 player to hide in, under and over. Also a derelict apartment block which is almost a playground for the better 617 players, and the last new addition is set on a cargo ship, with interior and exterior areas and large metal crates to allow players to duck and dodge between, but with crates stacked so high a clever 617 player can get a good birds eye view of the exterior if they use the new wall grab correctly.
Another previously unmentioned new feature is a new game type, called overrun. The premise of OverRun is to give new players a better chance to play as 617 and generally get better at the game before taking on the classic hdn_ gametype. In the current build there were only 3 maps for OverRun, but hopefully in the future we can expect separate maps for OverRun and hidden, overrun is generally best played on larger servers to allow for longer rounds, and more rampaging 617s!
So in closing, The Hidden Beta 2 is worlds ahead of the original, with all sorts of bells and whistles tacked onto it, when I probed around for a release date I only got the reply "soon!" . There are a few more little features tacked on to Beta 2, but the dev team have forbidden me to reveal their most heavily guarded secrets, guess we shall all have to wait and see to find out, won't we?
Stay tuned to the Hidden web-site for release information.
