What in the hell is this game even about? Seriously, don't call this game Prey 2 just because it has..... what one of the same alien creatures from the first game in it!

Honestly, this video looks amazing. The game will play absolutely nothing like that, and I hate the fact that it seems to have absolutely no continuation. Also, I'm glad to see the Bioshock plane crash take place as well as the random security guard/military man/COD cut scene of some dude clubbing you in the face and knocking you out.

If this game were called ANYTHING else, I would not even be posting this. I was probably one of the very few people to enjoy Prey and play it 100% through. It was an interesting story mixed with some well designed game elements.

I hate Kotaku for not having a linkable video. >:|

Prey was pretty fun. I mean, you go from slapping a dude around in a bar to waiting in line to get cattle prodded in high earth orbit. The most memorable part of the game for me was accidentally killing that guy in the machine (the same one that killed your grandfather) by pressing the button on the other side of the glass. Sorry man.

I've got measured hopes for Prey 2. The first got the basics right and a recent Edge preview that touched on how the portals and gravity flipping have been exchanged for open world, Mirror's Edge style gameplay (with guns :)) makes it sound more than your generic shooter. The controls are meant to be well streamlined - it'll be interesting to see how the free running compares to Mirror's Edge and Brink - and suited to your job as a bounty hunter - lots of chasing people through the city and using shortcuts to cut them off etc. You can do things like hang with one hand on a ledge while shooting with the other and apparently you can get 'from any point to any other point using multiple layers of verticality'. Not sure how true this will turn out to be, but it looks like the city has been built in verticle tiers with interconnecting routes that give you plenty choice as you navigate around. The screenshots looks nice. It has rpg lite elements - choosing which jobs you want, upgrading weapons, people to talk to etc - and plenty of action. Sounds all good so far.

Not bad for what appears to be a long cutscene. I wonder how the game will actually be though (there were only a couple of instances that appeared to be in-game). I understand the engine is Id Tech 4 though, maybe those are in-game cutscenes? Need more first person footage.

I kind of dig the look of what they are going for. It's sort of a seedy version of Mass Effect in a way and that in itself is no bad thing (ME is great, but it's a tad too shiny).

People liked Prey, really?

This is at the top of my list now. Conceptually, I am really digging what they are doing; It's all I ever wanted in a sci-fi shooter. I hope to see actual gameplay soon.

Me too. I just hope the game actually plays like what we saw.

Also, I'm not sure if true, but I read in an article that the final game will have 40 unique upgradeable weapons. O_O
If it really is true, this is officially the new Turok.

I was also reminded a little of Firefly due to the music :p

Anyone notice that the criminal says "They're using you" before he gets bountied?

Wow. If this game is essentially Grand Theft Mirror's Effect: Brotherhood... well I don't know what I'll do, but it will be sexual.

[edit] Yeah ZT, I wonder what that means for the story, given that Humans are likely few and far between?

given that Humans are likely few and far between?

Actually I think the main character is the only human on that planet. Since the premise is similar to Farscape, eg: human gets stranded in unknown part of the universe.

Interesting. I'm a little wary about how well that will work though. You're the only human, and yet the aliens clearly speak English...

Babelfish.

I wouldn't be surprised if gameplay looked something like that video, except a lot less fluid of course, looking forward to this.

The concept is amazing. I see the ideological lineages of some of my favorite games and movies in this. If they can make it work, i'll explode with satisfaction.

I noticed that. Could be an interesting story. You have to wonder how a human air marshal survived in this alien civilization long enough to become a well known an feared bounty hunter.

I also like the funny mobster alien. Hopefully there will be more colorful characters in the game like him.

They could easily use a "babelfish" type plot device to explain how the aliens speak English and how the human understands alien language. Or just claim that the aliens have been observing us for years and learned our language.

Right when they show the HUD the very first time and the mobster alien is about to talk, it shows that there's translating going on in the top left.

Regardless of how awesome that game looks, I don't understand how this includes the first game one bit other than we're now going to their planet to hunt certain ones. Call me ol' fashioned, but I remember a time when stories connected to each other instead of branching off and using some similar aliens and maybe similar gameplay elements. I think the main character in Prey was Tommy the Indian, and honestly, that was a decent enough story to go with, but they just needed more to it. Now, this looks exactly like you said Dave. Grand Theft Mirror's Effect: Brotherhood. I'm glad it's not a run of the mill COD, but I just REALLY hope there is continuation remotely in that damn story.

Yup, just like there is story continuation between Quake 1 and Quake 2. trollface.jpg

To be honest I didn't care for the story in Prey 1 so I'm not bothered by this at all. Although they could've just as easily called it something else.

Does the opening scene of this take place in the same plane that you see sucked into the Sphere in the first Prey, which is then later found being consumed by the ground?

I'm not sure how this can be a sequel, given the fate of the first Sphere at the end of Prey.

Should be named Star Wars: Episode 2: Bounty chasing on that planet.

I guess no one remembers Far Cry 2. Just because there is a sequel doesn't mean it has anything to do with the first.

Which there are still a billion people confused at how that's a sequel. Then again, I understand what you're getting at, but to call this a sequel to the first Prey and from the looks of it, tear away every ounce of the first's story is kind of crazy. I mean it looks like a 100% different game. Far Cry 2 was moved to Africa with cars and fire and all that 'awesome' stuff, and man, I don't even remember that damn story.

Man, I don't even care anymore. I've decided the original Prey was fun, and I just want this game to be equally fun. >_<

This looks sort of interesting I guess. I really didn't like Prey very much but this doesn't seem very similar.

They should have just called it something different. Other than building off of the first games fan base and exposure, there is no real reason that we can see to call this a sequel. You know Yatzee is going to wonder this in his review(if he reviews it).

Yeah, because Yahtzee is usually scrambling to find criticisms for the games he reviews!

It's just brand name recognition, and probably a bit of fan (lol) service in the game itself. Prey might not have been exceptionally well received, but it's a relatively well known property in PC gaming since it was in our faces for so long during development. They probably figured it was worth milking a bit more.

Lack of scantily clad alien lovelies in any of the promos is a tad disappointing though ;)

The trailer reminded me of exactly that. Never played much of the first Prey, but this one is super cool conceptually. Hope to see more of it soon.

I'm trying to think of a mechanic or way to implement what we saw in the trailer into gameplay. One idea is aesthetic: when running and shooting, have the gun bob around more and the reticle shift around a limited area in the center of the screen before moving the screen frame (The could just turn out to be a nightmare, but its an idea). They would also need something like Brink's S.M.A.R.T system for the running. I would also be nice to have the advanced looking HUG do more than just look cool but have functions that affect gameplay. Have an auto lock for those shoulder rocket features that you can use without putting away the gun you have in your hands.

Why do I feel like there will be mechanics that are similar to Bioshock's plasmids and Deus Ex enhancements?

just watched the E3 walkthrough..........
why do they even bother calling this "Prey"? it's nothing like the first game
looks like shit tbh
