dunno how i missed this one but i just watched some footage from e3 2k5 and i have to say that it looks pretty promising
take doom 3 and make it even more bizarre and you've got Prey
anyways, check out the movie and enjoy!
feb 2006!

;o U Stole My Name

EDIT: well to be fair it was me tht stole u name i guess...but i had no idea

Yeah i saw this last night and i was amazed at it looks really fun.

yeah you stole his name

Doom 3 engine is teh sux0r. I'm trying not to be facetious, but every single game I've seen on that engine has the same piss-poor substitution of polygons for normals attitude. It just doesn't look real.

But the textures are pleasingly high resolution, unlike D3's.

Wow, thanks for posting that! I had seen the shaky cam version but this one was a lot better in terms of quality. I love the DOOM 3 engine and think its capable of doing some amazing things. Prey displays this perfectly. The weapons looked very interesting and the design of them was well done.

Once again, thanks for posting this.

I still think Quake IV's going to be the best game using the Doom engine. Prey does look good though.

I already payed $50 for Doom 3 and I will be damned if I pay that much to play it again. I'll pass.

It's a completely different game, not even done by the same people...

@B-man ive had this name since i was born :P
also, considering what ive seen on this game, itll be nothing like d3
its worth keepin an eye on

Cant wait for Q4 or prey. Love the D3 engine and its lighting/shadowing. Looks good and runs great. I think the portals and unique ladders will make prey different from the competition.

Since the average PC cannot do high polygon real time shadowing games based on doom 3 must be low polygon. ;( You cant really complain though because it is the best shadowing we have. You can try to compare it to U3 but it has 3 years of faster hardware.

The shadowing is nice, although the complete lack of lightmaps is going to hinder outdoor maps. Farcry had a good balance of stencils, cubemapped shadows and prerendered lightmaps.

What gets me is when the 'ultra' settings on Doom3 don't significantly improve image quality; instead they use uncompressed textures, which look almost identical to their compressed alternatives. If they went for higher resolution compressed textures, or more polygons, they could achieve a nicer-looking end result with the same performance hit.

I guess it's not the Doom3 engine that annoys me so much as Id's use of it.

Exactly! I thought far cry did lighting/shadows right with its mix of static and dynamic shadows. It seems to be the best compromise between HL2 and D3 which puts it #1 in my oppinion. I think the uncompressed textures was kind of useless but at least it was an option for people who have 512/1024MB of VRAM.

I think it will hinder outdoor maps but I think you could make a great outdoor map as you could make 1 lightsource (sun) and make a real day to night cycle with perfect shadowing and no more performance hit then 1 light (as they are all dynamic).

As for prey I hope they will do a good job with the native/spiritual aspect of the game as it seems mostly like a horror. From what I have seen the game will look great but I hope it does have some outdoor areas.

The problem with this is that stencil shadows are lines; daylight shadows are generally soft and outdoor enviroments in computer games rely on radiosity lighting to keep everything smooth. Doom3's outdoor enviroments, if only one light was used, will have unrealistically dark parts (just like the indoor enviroments, but because of the setting this wasn't so noticable) and the general effect outdoors will be harsh; not the natural lighting that is noticeable in Farcry or indeed the new Unreal tech.

Looks cool IMO, I will be getting it, I am always looking for new and interesting games to play, have nothing against D3 or its engine, I love both.
