i am having the exact same problem, and i just redownloaded hl2. i havent even had the chance to change the resolution, so i dont know if reinstalling would work since i have a nice fresh copy on my computer and its not working. plz help us

doube post sorry

i figured it out! check your monitor, i just checked it and hl2 is only ****ing 62% done downloading! so i guess i have to CONTINUE waiting.

Yes, Why? is right.

The problem might be that HL2 even when it hasn't finished downloading let's you start it anyway. Which is nuts, but there we go.

Right-click on the little Steam icon on the bottom right of your desktop, select "monitor" and see if "Steam network usage" is showing something downloading.

well, the first time i loaded up HL2 after several hours of downloading, I was stuck on that loading screen for more than 20 minutes. The download percentage meter is crap, don't trust it. It told me I was at 40% after I watched the whole thing download and whatnot, then played through the game without incident.

Start the game up then go and make a sandwich. Come back and you should have the start screen!

thought i'd throw this in.....

Hi, i've been having fun the last few days wondering why I can't play Hl2 anymore after I reformatted my HD. Bought the silver meal deal via steam and played in awe of this kick ass game(just got into nova prospect) up until I had to reformat my comp (XP..sp2,1700+,512,ti420064mb) a couple of days ago. I have cable so I havn't burn't a hardcopy yet cause it only takes a few hours to d/l. So I went to play and It would start to load up and freeze on the fuzzy opening screen when the menu is supposed to come up. Thought it might be drivers no...audio...no, corrupt hl2 files ? Tried everything I could think of and (yes I rebooted) then I noticed that HL2 was only 56% done?? So I deleted the game content and started to d/l it again..... it "finished" and started to load the game and this time got to the menu where I could change the settings and all but froze on the "new game" loading screen, checked the properties and it was only at 56%???? It seems to me there are two major bugs, 1...it won't complete the download and 2, a HUGE 2...why would this game even begin to load-up when it's only at 56% installed??? Bizarre, I'm going to paste this in support also, thx for your time, peace, Dr. Love.

ps. i've tried the verifier via steam news page...no help

pss. ....removed the hl2 gcf file and am d/l it again, says it has 8 min. left on the d/l and in the properties it's says 68%...looks like it won't finish again...very strange...don't see how or why it won't give me the complete game but will allow the game to start up partially, keep in mind i've tried it all from reformatting my HD to all the drivers in the book, is my Steam account corrupt somehow???...thx Love.

pss...i've been to Steam support(no response yet..holidays, i hope) and to the forums there..no help.

Dr. Love,

Have you tried the official fix ideas?

Look at "Regular Game Downloads" and "Next Step to Try".

The second one, shutting off Steam and deleting clientregistry.blob and restarting Steam is the one a lot of peope recommend when HL2 gets stuck while downloading.

Locked on blurry loading screen

The first time I installed the game it worked. However, it locked up upon save game feature. I tried running it again and get the blurry loading screen. It locks up and I hear some beeping and two errors come up. I cannot see what they are. I hit escape and it kicks me off the screen. I've tired waiting for 45 min. on the loading screen and nothing still happens. I've even reinstalled the game and tried turning off my sound card. Same thing happens. Someone suggested copying same files from the Bin directory to the Half-life directory. I've tried this no effect.

Windows XP service pack 2
Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz, 512Ram
Integrated audio SoundMax Digital
Integrated Video Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV
Directx 9C

I've tried slowing down directx sound acceleration to the lowest setting. No effect. All drivers are up to date. Odd thing is Counterstrike works fine. No flaws there.

This game needs a patch
