Problem Updating Steam

I finnaly got my hands on the 700mb cache version of steam off a friend I've installed it okay. I've tried to start it and it comes up with the standard updating window then crashes with the message in this pic.

I've allready tried installing the 700kb steam install over the top and it didn't work. Is there a way to fix this or do I have to reinstall
Steam.

Right I'm off to play Perimeter windowed. I've got Firefox auto refreshing so I'll be able to reply to any questions without interupting my game.

The steaminstall_full.exe is outdated and can cause problems. Use the one from http://www.steampowered.com/.

Try deleting Steam.exe, and Steam.dll and probably some of the other .dll files and clientregistry.blob before you install the 700kb installer.

But I agree with JPack, steaminstall_full.exe is horribly outdated, it's better to go from scratch with the 700kb one.

Try deleting the file clientregistry.blob and restart Steam. If that doesn't work try what Epsi said or remove Steam completely and just install it using the 700kb installer.

Sorry for the late reply but I got it working, finnaly. Basicly I just ditched the old steam install except for the game cache files and installed the 700kb version.

It's going well so far
