problem with cs/hl multiplayer on network!!

Hello all, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this problem before (did search but found nothing)... My brother and I both have computers connected to the same network (with router). We have different ip adresses but the same "default gateway" and "subnet mask" (not sure what importance those have).
Problem: We have recently tried to play cs:s multiplayer and it wont work - we have different steam accounts and both of us have been able to play before on our own when the other person is not on line. When one of us is in a server and the other tries to join we get an error saying "connection attempt failed after 4 retrys".

Can anyone figure out what the problem is or how to fix it please!!?

If your useing same cd keys it will not let you play in same server and sumtimes at all just depends on game

Well, he says they have sperate Steam accounts, so I believe they do have different CD keys. It probobly has somthing do with how much bandwith one computer is using or somthing. I'm not to familiar with routers and such.
