problem with far cry demo

so i built a new computer yesterday:

amd athlon 64 3000+
512mb RAM
ati radeo 9800 pro 128mb

everything's running great so i decided to try out the far cry demo to see what she could do.

i've tried a ton of different combinations of settings, high and low, but everytime i get the same error....

i start up the game and about 5% into the load screen my computer locks up. it usually cuts out the signal to my monitor while doing so too and i'm forced with having to reset.

it's the only game/demo i'm currently having any sort of problem with. anyone ever hear of this problem or have an idea of what may be causing it?
or could it be that it's the old buggy demo problem and the full version should run fine?

yes, all drivers and whatnot are current

Then, I'm thinking maybe it's just a buggy demo problem. I think the full version should run almost perfectly.

Buggy demo - download from 3dgamers.com, both of it's version are fine.

that's what i figured.

i could never understand why companies release demos that aren't as compatible as their retail versions. seems to me it would just hurt their sales. gamers in my situation would just say screw it, why spend 40 bucks taking a risk on something when the demo completely bugged out on me. thankfully i've got the good ol hl2 community tech support.
