When I went to play Half-Life 2 today Steam informed me that my drivers were out of date. So I went to Ati's site and downloaded the latest drivers and began to install them. Before the install could finish however an error message saying "The setup could not complete the installation. Try to set up the display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup." I tried this 2 or 3 more times with the same result. I played Blueshift, Half-Life 2, and the F.E.A.R. demo with no problems, but when I restarted the computer an error message popped up saying that Ati control panel could not launch, because the drivers were missing or damaged. The computer is obviously not using the Radeon 9800 for display (it defaulted to 800x600 instead of 1024x768 and the screen flickers when I scroll down). So what exactly has happened and what can I do to fix it?

Check in Device Manager to see what Windows is saying your display adapter is :)

I would completely remove teh display drivers and teh control center from your pc with add remove programs, restarting when it requests it. If both are on the list, remove teh control center first. Then when you restart after removing the display driver, you will be using the default xp driver for your display card. Then install the latest ati display and then the control center. Also make sure you have teh .net framework installed as its a requirement of the control center. Hope this helps.
