Problems loading HL2

I am having problems getting HL2 past the loading screen as it stops loading and add what I believe is an error message at the top of the screen but it is in Black so you can't see it.

I have the following setup:-

Athlon XP2000+
Nvidia Geforce FX5200 128mb
512mb Ram
Win 98se
Sound Blaster 128

I have spoken to the support line on the box and they stated that there are new drivers for the graphics card but I can't find them on the Nvidia site. Could this be what is stopping the game from loading and can anyone confirm the new drivers for my card?

More people are experiencing this issue, with different hardware setups. It might be a directX 9 issue as well, or just something with halflife. Too bad so far the cause is unknown --- yet. The most recent drivers won't help you for now.

I also have the same problem with the "Loading..." screen. It gets to the second blurry "Loading..." picture, then stops... no HD activity, nothing. Can't see an error message, it just doesn't finish loading.

However, this is when trying to run HL1:Source, which is the ONLY this I have downloaded so far. HL2 isn't on my system yet. So it's probably a #$&%@ Steam-related issue, as opposed to a HL2 problem per se.

Have tried verifying the file as per Steam instructions, no luck. Tried running HL1:Source with various options, eg. -dxlevel 80, -dxlevel 70, -gl -w 640... nothing helps.

System:
Toshiba Tecra S1 (Centrino 1.5) 1GB RAM
ATI Mobility 9000 (Directx 8.1), 64MB dedicated RAM
SoundMax integrated sound.

Other games work well on this system, btw.

fellas, you need to make sure "amount aquired" equals 100%. On the Play Games menu right click hl2 and see properties. it tells you there. Make sure it is also on "Always Keep This Game Up To Date". when it reaches 100 it should work...mine did until now
It now says when i open it "This game is currently unavailable. Try Later" WHAT THE F***?? This is supposed to be the greatest release all year...nice work. anyways for most of you just waiting until 100% will work.

i have 100% aquired, and i keep getting stuck on the loading screen after 5 blocks have appeared, thats all i get, everything just stops

I am getting the same problem just after the valve start screen im just get a black screen then drops to desktop, tried uninstall and re-installed and tried a fix from another thread (sends me to desktop) with no luck HELP!
Got in frist time but change my resolution after that has not worked. I play doom3 and far cry with all high setting no problems.

AMD 64 3400+ winxp pro sp2
Radeon 9800XT lateist driver
1GB Ram

I have to agree... I posted a possible solution to the "loading..." screen problem (below), which may help *some* people.. not sure if it's all because of incomplete downloads or not..

Unable to load HL2

Hi, I'm having the same problem :flame: I've spent 18 hours now installing, updating, uninstalling, changing settings and disabling everything but Explorer in the Windows background & it still wont run! I'm using an :-

AMD Athlon XP 3000+
Nvidia - GeForce 5950 Ultra - 255 MB RAM (Dual display)
Sound Blaster Live
1022 MB RAM

I cant even run the options page (street scene at the start) in any display setting other than LOW/MEDIUM . I've asked for help and had no reply as yet.

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME GET THIS GAME TO RUN!!!!!
